Specialist tour operator Journey Latin America has learnt that Nicaragua announced the start of works on a canal linking the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean.
This planned piece of engineering, undertaken by the a Chinese company, will be longer, deeper and wider than the Panama Canal and expects, says the Government, to move 5% of the world's maritime commerce This will bring great economic benefits and double the GDP (gross domestic product).
The Grand Canal of Nicaragua, as it has been named, will cross the country through Lake Ometepe and there are some concerns about the impact on the environment. It will definitely change the landscape and so Journey Latin America is offering the chance to visit this small country before the water flows.
“Nicaragua is moving forward in a big way; some changes are grander, such as the construction of a new canal. This is definitely the time to visit.” Rafe Stone, Product Manager.
