Zoo Miami Highlights

Zoo Miami

• Zoo Miami houses more than 2,000 wild animals in an environment that closely approximates their natural habitats and gives the visitor the feeling of embarking on an international safari or delving into the Amazon rainforests.

• Zoo Miami has more than 1,200 tropical trees, plants and flowers in its botanical collection visible from its walkways, adding to its beautiful, relaxing ambiance.

• Large, open-air exhibits allow visitors to enjoy beautiful and endangered wildlife at a safe, yet remarkably close, range.

• With 340 developed acres on a 740-acre parcel of land, Zoo Miami is the only zoo in the continental United States located in a subtropical climate.

• Zoo Miami works with other institutions around the world in 46 Species Survival Plans, aiding the Sumatran tiger, greater one-horned Indian rhinoceros, giant river otter, and other endangered species.

• Zoo Miami's breeding programs have received widespread recognition and a variety of prestigious awards, ranging from several First Breeding Certificates to the Edward H. Bean Award – the zoological profession's highest honor.

• Zoo Miami has added a Research and Conservation Department that works with national and international organizations and whose mission statement is: Conserve the natural resources of South Florida and imperiled areas around the world through community education, active research and field work, establishing a culture of sustainable practices, and collaboration with our partners.

• Zoo Miami's new Master Plan redesigns and expands the zoo to include a spectacular new entrance, new exhibits such as Florida: Mission Everglades, water rides, and interactive opportunities.  The plan envisions the zoo as the centerpiece of a new tourist destination with themed attractions, stores, restaurants, and hotels.

• The zoo's Amazon and Beyond is one of the world's most varied and comprehensive tropical exhibits with jaguars, anacondas, giant river otters, harpy eagles, air-conditioned buildings, and a unique display of a forest before and during flood times. At 27 acres, Amazon and Beyond is larger than the average American zoo.

• Zoo Miami is one of only three zoos in the United States to have giant river otters.

• More than 15,000 households representing more than 60,000 South Florida residents are Zoological Society of Florida (ZSF) members.  Average income of ZSF members is greater than $70K.

• ZSF's Zoo Magnet Program at Richmond Heights Middle School is one of only 11 such programs in the country associated with an accredited zoo.

• Our multi-lingual education staff had over 15,000 sessions at the zoo with school children and their teachers during the past year.  About 80,000 school children benefit from our education programs each year.

• Zoo Miami hosts community-wide annual special events such as Feast with the Beasts, Music of the Americas, Zoofari Spring Camp, Great Egg Safari, Party for the Planet, Brew at the Zoo, Zoofari Summer Camp, Spooky Zoo Nights, Monster Masquerade, Zoo Boo, Zoo Lights, and many more!
