Yukon – Where the Fish Are Biting

Tourism Yukon

The Yukon's pristine wilderness provides the perfect backdrop for some incredible fishing lodges. While a few are accessible by road, many involve a float plane or helicopter ride to get to. But all of them offer world-class fishing on secluded lakes and rivers. Lodges offer a range of accommodations and facilities – from rustic cabins, to deluxe, all inclusive accommodation with gourmet chefs on hand.

Depending upon the location, fish species can include Lake, Bull and Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling, Northern Pike, Whitefish, Dolly Varden, Burbot and Salmon. Experienced guides are on hand to share their favourite fishing spots and techniques, with lodges providing all the necessary gear.

In addition to outstanding fishing, many lodges also offer other activities that can include anything from quad biking to heli-hiking excursions. And because of their remote locations, wildlife viewing is almost guaranteed. Don't be surprised if find yourself sharing your lake with moose, bears or eagles. Lengthy summer days under the midnight sun mean that you can fish to your heart's content even if that means at 2am….there's always a fish biting somewhere.

Or maybe you prefer to experience Yukon as a winter wonderland and try your hand at Ice Fishing? The serenity of pristine winter wilderness, combined with the excitement of catching the big one, makes ice fishing a uniquely northern must-do activity.

If walking onto a frozen lake with a fishing rod and an auger doesn't sound like typical holiday behaviour, you're right—it's better. Depending on the year, Yukon's ice fishing season begins mid-winter and can go well into spring. The days often have clear blue skies, and the sun shining on the snow brightens things up even more.  If you're not a regular ice fisher, rent all the gear and wardrobe while you're here. Then rock that parka-and-shades look—very ice fishing chic.

Read about Adam Weymouth's adventure down the Yukon River in his new book, Kings of the Yukon:
Travelling in a canoe for four months along the 2000-mile-long Yukon River, Adam Weymouth follows the salmon migration and traces the profound interconnectedness of the people and the fish through searing portraits of the individuals he encounters. He offers a powerful, nuanced glimpse into the erosion of indigenous culture, and into our ever-complicated relationship with the natural world. Weaving in the history of the salmon run and their mysterious life cycle, Kings of the Yukon is extraordinary adventure and nature writing at its most compelling.
