My Clarence Valley

Yamba has been ranked #14 in Australian Traveller's 100 Best Towns in Australia to Visit, earning national recognition as one of the country's must-visit destinations for its timeless coastal lifestyle, natural beauty and unmistakable sense of ease.

Perched at the mouth of the Clarence River on Yaegl Country, Yamba is a town that does not try to impress. It simply is. Familiar, welcoming and quietly magical, it is a place that feels like home, even on a first visit.

This recognition by Australian Traveller's editorial panel reflects what visitors have long known. Yamba is where life slows, connections deepen, and moments effortlessly become memories.

A coastal town that lives at an easy pace

In Yamba, the hardest decision of the day is which beach to visit. With five distinct beaches within walking distance of town, life moves to the rhythm of the tides, from early-morning surf checks to barefoot strolls along the foreshore and sunset rituals at the iconic Yamba Breakwall.

As Australian Traveller panellist Irene Jones neatly summed it up, Yamba delivers “beautiful beaches without the fuss.”

The town is designed for easy exploration. Park the car, wander between cafés, boutiques and ocean pools, and strike up conversations with baristas who remember your order by the second visit. Generational local businesses, familiar faces and walkable streets give Yamba a rare sense of belonging that visitors feel almost immediately.

Where river, ocean and story meet

Yamba's setting at the mouth of Australia's largest east coast river gives the town a front-row seat to both river and ocean life. Dolphins trail fishing boats into the harbour, anglers line the breakwall at dawn, and the Clarence River invites kayaking, ferry rides to Iluka and long, lazy afternoons drifting past mangroves and sandbanks.

Australian Traveller panellist Rae Johnston captured the spirit of the town during filming for Going Places. “We filmed here for Going Places. Don't say no to the Yamba prawns at the bowling club. This place is really special. The river, the ocean, the people, even the op-shopping is great,” she said.

Just beyond town, the Yuraygir Coastal Walk begins its journey north along one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in New South Wales. Beaches, headlands, lagoons and heathland combine to create a landscape where migrating whales often steal the show.

It is this deep connection to land and sea, paired with a strong sense of place and story, that continues to draw travellers back, year after year, generation after generation.

A proud moment for Yamba and a wider invitation

While the recognition rightly celebrates Yamba in its own light, it also highlights the broader appeal of the Clarence Valley, where river towns, historic centres and country communities sit within easy reach.

“Yamba's place on this list is something locals are rightly proud of,” Clarence Valley Mayor Ray Smith said.
“Visitors come for the coastal lifestyle, and what they often discover is a whole region that invites them to stay a little longer and explore a little further.”

A town worth the journey

Being named among Australian Traveller's Top 100 Towns confirms Yamba's appeal to today's travellers. These are people seeking destinations that are authentic rather than over-designed, restorative rather than rushed.

Yamba is not about ticking off attractions. It is about how a place makes you feel. Easy. Present. Connected.

As travellers across Australia look for meaningful escapes where nature, community and nostalgia come together, Yamba stands quietly confident, exactly as it always has, ready to welcome those who find their way there.
