WOW Air Unleashes A Bun Fight For The Window Seat

WOW air

From lakes and glaciers to national parks and volcanoes, a bird's eye view of Iceland's spectacular scenery marks the start of an unforgettable visit to the Nordic island.

That's why low-cost airline WOW air has launched seat with a view, listing the top ten Icelandic sights for passengers to look out for during the descent into Reykjavik from London Gatwick - and noting where they should sit to get the best view.

As the aircraft approach Iceland from a south-easterly direction, those sitting on the right hand side in rows 1-10 and 18-29 are best placed to see the sights, with window seat F obviously providing optimum viewing. Travellers in rows 11-13 will be delighted to have prime access to the emergency exit, but their views will be somewhat obscured by the aircraft's less aesthetically pleasing, although essential, wing section.

Therefore out of a total of 174 seats, a select 22 offer front row views of the best scenery that Iceland has to offer. Passengers can either pick these top spots during the booking process for an additional £5 each or enter into a game of seat roulette and hope they are allocated one for free in the random selection process at the airport.

WOW air's top ten sights

1. Lake Jökulsárlón
A large glacial lagoon in southeast Iceland, it's also a popular hangout place for her majesty's secret servant, James Bond.

2. Vatnajökull glacier
The largest and most voluminous Icelandic glacier, it covers more than 8% of the country.

3. Mt. Hvannadalshnjúkur
As Iceland's highest summit, a lot of mountain hikers are attracted to its popular hiking route.

4. The Westman Islands
Positioned just off the southern shore, this collection of islands was formed by submarine volcanoes around 11,000 years ago.

5. Eyjafjallajökull volcano
Everyone's favourite volcano which brought Europe to a grinding halt in March 2010.

6. Mt. Hekla
Iceland's most active volcano, it towers over the lowlands of the south at 1,491m high and was believed to be a gateway to hell during the dark ages.

7. Thingvellir National Park
Home to the world's oldest parliament, this national park is nestled along the border between the North American and European tectonic plates.

8. Reykjavik
Iceland's capital and the world's northernmost capital of a sovereign state.

9. Island of Eldey
Something for those sitting in seats A, B and C, this lonely volcanic rock 10 miles off the coast is home to the world's biggest colony of Northern Gannets.

10. Blue lagoon
Iceland's most famous geothermal spa, spot it in the air and take a dip in it later.

Anyone unlucky enough to be given an aisle seat will have to get stuck into the WOW air in-flight magazine or hope their neighbour has some descriptive vocabulary to bring the Icelandic scenery to life and a creative flair for pronunciation.
