World Record Attempt This Australia Day

International Traveller Magazine
  • Most Surfers Riding the same Wave
  • Current Record is 110 People (Cape Town, South Africa)
  • Fund Raising for the South Coast Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter & the Broulee Surfers Surf Lifesaving Club
  • Giveaways, BBQ, entertainment and presentation to follow the event at the Tomakin Sports and Social Club (Skydive vouchers, Surfboards, Mogo Zoo passes and other surf/sporting paraphernalia.)

This Australia day will see more than the usual January holidaymakers on the NSW south Coast.

North Broulee Beach 15km South of Batemans Bay will be the scene of an attempt to break the world record for the most surfers on a single wave. The current record is held by Kahuna Promotions, Cape Town, South Africa and currently stands at 110.

Event organiser Glenn Hall from Surf the Bay Surf School is confident Australia will take the record on Australia Day. “We have over 140 surfers registered for the day already and just under a week to hopefully generate up to a total of 200 participants for the event. We are hoping to comfortably beat the South African record – and Australia Day? - What better day to do it” Hall enthused. “Trying to get 160 plus people on the same wave really is a bit like herding sheep.”

Both Glenn and Tim (Surf The Bay Surf School owners) are trained primary and PDHPE teachers with a passion for teaching and surfing, making Surf the Bay Surf School a popular choice for parents putting their kids into lessons, as well as surf camps for large School/University & Corporate Groups. Surf The Bay can cater for over 100 students at a time, preparing them well for a large event such as the Guinness World Record attempt on Australia Day. There are a number of variables such as surf and weather conditions as well as the large number of participants that will need to be considered on the day.

So get on BOARD and get down to North Broulee Beach on Australia Day to bring the world record home to Australia where it belongs.

The world record attempt is being held to raise funds for the South Coast Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Broulee Surfers Surf Lifesaving Club both within the region. Participants are urged to register before the event at: surfthebay.com.au

Participants need to be at North Broulee Beach by 8am and spectators are welcome to preview the event from 9am onwards.

Tomakin Sports and Social Club will be running the after event BBQ and Presentation from 11.30am.

Sponsored By: Surf the Bay Surf School, Tomakin Sports and Social Club, WIN TV Network, Prime Boards & Poppen Design.
