World-Class Los Angeles International Airport
Takes Flight with the Construction of a
New International Terminal
$1.7-Billion Dollar Terminal has Passed the Halfway Mark
and will Usher in a New Level of Passenger Service
with First-Class Amenities
LOS ANGELES—(April 22, 2012)—Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), ranks among the nation's busiest airports for on-time arrivals and departures and is the country's second busiest airport and seventh busiest in the world.
Pow Wow delegates will get a VIP behind-the-scenes tour of the multi-million dollar New Tom Bradley International Terminal, which broke ground in 2010 and has just passed its halfway construction mark. Designed by renowned architect Curtis Fentress, the New Tom Bradley International Terminal will feature a 1.25 million square-foot, state-of-the-art terminal.
The sprawling facility, which costs $1.7 billion to build, will include a Great Hall lined with premier shops and local chef-owned restaurants that include Ford's Filling Station whose chef/owner, Ben Ford, is the son of actor Harrison Ford. Other well-known celebrity chef concepts include Wolfgang Puck Express, Loteria Grill, Monsieur Marcel, Daily Grill and Skewers by Morimoto. Other conveniences include plush lounge space and an enlarged customs facilities to accelerate the processing of passengers. A fleet of new concourses will result in 15 new boarding gates with expansive seating and hold room areas that can accommodate the next generation of aircraft, such as the Airbus A380 super jumbo jet and the Boeing B787 Dreamliner.
Visitors to LAX can also get a bird's eye view of the construction area from atop the Observation Deck, which is open free to the public and offers optimum viewing for landings and take-offs. Housed in a futuristic and iconic building constructed more than a half-century ago, the "Theme Building," as it is known, soars 135-feet above the u-shaped cluster of terminals and is reminiscent of "The Jetsons" dwelling from the 1960s cartoon. Crowning the structure is a popular restaurant for both residents and the jet set.
Aviation enthusiasts will also want to pay a visit to LAX's Flight Path Museum, located in the LAX Imperial Terminal at 6661 W. Imperial Highway. Exhibits and programs, which chronicle LA's aviation history, are continuously updated. A DC-3, manufactured in 1941 at the Douglas Aircraft Co. plant in Santa Monica and once the mainstay of civil air transportation, is among the many exhibits. The museum also offers a flight simulator program, a speaker series and a treasure trove of airline memorabilia. At the end of this year the Flight Path Museum will host a major exhibit spotlighting design features of the New Tom Bradley International Terminal, which will allow the public to preview and understand the full scope of the project.
With over $4.11 billion in completed or ongoing projects, LAneXt—touted as the largest public works project in LA history and the first major capital investment since the city hosted the 1984 Summer Olympics—is literally the "next" chapter in the story of LAX.
LAX offers more than 565 daily flights to 81 destinations in the U.S. with more than 1,000 weekly nonstop flights to 65 international destinations on 75 carriers and is the recipient of LEED Silver Certification for Airport Renovation.
