Antarctica Day celebrates the signing of the Antarctic Treaty on December 01, 1959 and the setting aside of nearly 10 per cent of the Earth “forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes ... in the interests of all mankind”.
The United Kingdom was one of 12 original signatories to the Treaty which has grown to 55 parties as of 2022. Aurora Expeditions was a founding member of the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO), which created the environmental protocols for all commercial visitors to Antarctica to help protect and conserve the icy continent for future generations to visit.
