2019's theme is “Women and War” so visitors will be treated to renditions of Trojan Women, Helen (both by Euripides), and finally the hilarious Lysistrata, Aristophanes' comedy telling of how the women of Athens protested against the Peloponnesian War with an ardent sex strike.

Sounds like something not to be missed… Tickets are between £ 40 and £ 80 depending on days and seating

Helen - from 09/05/2019 to 22/06/2019

"Elena" is a tragedy, not without elements sometimes comic, in which Euripides offers a dialectic between true and false, between reality and appearance telling a story parallel to that narrated by Homer where the real Helen was brought by Hermes to the island of Faro in Egypt and it is only "her double" to have gone to Troy with Paris. A very strong representation of the "useless slaughter" of the Trojan war.

Trojan Women - from 10/05/2019 to 23/06/2019

The pain of the most distinguished Trojan women, Ecuba, Cassandra, Polissena, Andromache explodes in distinct episodes and highlights how the power-thirsty males (Odysseus and Agamennone) have crushed the female universe with death and violence.

Lysistrata - from 28/06/2019 to 06/07/2019

The story of Lysistrata, the only one of Aristophanes' comedies to bear the name of the human protagonist in the title, is very well known: to put an end to the long Peloponnesian war that troubles Greece, the Athenian Lysistrata convinces all Greek women to blackmail their males with one sex strike.

Faced with such blackmail, connected as it is to a primary need, Greek men can only give in. In this way the war is unmasked in all its negativity, as a deprivation of natural rights and of common and individual happiness.
