Heartwarming adventure with lots of beautiful free-to-use pictures

The facts:

Travel writer Hannah Engelkamp and an eccentric donkey called Chico recently arrived back after walking all the way around the circumference of Wales - a 1000-mile journey that took over five months. They were mostly camping and often put up by people they met along the way, using social media and local newspapers, TV and radio. Now Hannah is writing the book and making the film and readers can get involved via the very active Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign which has a week left to run.

The story, from Hannah:

The Wales Coast Path opened in May 2012, and I was inspired to wrap up work and just do it. A few weeks later I had a sudden epiphany - I must take a donkey! I've never owned an animal before, underestimated what a big deal it would be, and realised I was really quite scared of Chico.

But we set off, in May 2013, and over the following six months walked right round the coast and border of Wales, doubling my initial optimistic estimate. We camped in people's gardens, farmers' fields, and in lots of wild spots - amongst sand dunes and under gorse bushes, and in parks in the middle of cities. We were also put up in wonderful places like a lighthouse, two hay barns, and several beer gardens.

Chico carried packs and got strong and healthy, and from the very start he was an adventurous donkey. Slowly we became friends; spending 24 hours a day with each other wore us down.

I'm now writing the book and making the film and visiting Chico every day in his field near Aberystwyth. I'm running it as a Kickstarter campaign which is going well - we're trying to raise £28,000 and in return for online pledges people get the book and film, and the chance to go for a walk and picnic with the wonderdonkey himself. The Kickstarter finishes on the 29th of January; if we don't raise the full amount, we don't get a penny.

About the team

I'm a 34-year-old travel writer. I edited two national travel magazines, and a travel website, before going freelance four years ago. My partner Rhys Thwaites-Jones (39) is the filmmaking side of the team - he travels all over the world shooting for the BBC, National Geographic, Sky, FIVE and Channel 4, and currently has a series airing globally on the National Geographic Channel. Chico is a five-year-old gelding who was bred to be a beach donkey but refused to put his hooves on the sand.
