Witness A Total Solar Eclipse From The Faroe Islands With Taber Holidays

Scandinavia Only

A total solar eclipse is one of the most unique and spectacular astronomical events you are ever likely to witness. Taber Holidays is offering you the chance to do exactly that - from one of only two places in the world where it can be observed from land next March – the fascinating Faroe Islands.

On March 20th 2015, the moon will move directly in front of the sun and block its rays entirely, casting a dark shadow upon the earth. This period of totality will last for two minutes on the Faroe Islands and guests on Taber Holidays' eclipse tour will join locals in viewing this truly rare and captivating phenomenon. Celebrations will then take place throughout the day with a host of cultural events planned and a focus on local food and drink.

For a total solar eclipse to occur the sun, moon and earth have to come together in a straight line, with the moon passing between the earth and the sun, obscuring its light. The next one won't be visible in Europe until 2026.

Situated in the North Atlantic, almost exactly mid-way between Scotland, Iceland and Norway, The Faroe Islands is a dream destination for fell-walkers, bird watchers and those who simply like the remote, exposed, raw nature they exude.

Guests will have the option to stay in either an apartment on a self-catering basis, in a B&B, or really embrace the culture and lodge with a local family also on a B&B basis. Accommodation will be in Tórshavn, the world's smallest capital city, or in one of the outlying villages.

As well as the opportunity to watch the total solar eclipse, guests will also be able to explore some of the archipelago and take part in an optional excursion by coach to Vestmanna. Here they can join a boat trip sailing alongside the nearby cliffs, home to many different types of bird including the puffin. (Costs £77pp).

For those photography and art enthusiasts, a particularly scenic tour is possible. Travelling by coach, the trip starts in the harbour, passes over a narrow sound and the highest waterfall in the country. The journey continues to the charming village of Eidi where guests will visit local artist Sigrun Gunnarsdóttir, granddaughter of one of the first Faroese painters. Carrying on, the coach will pass the highest mountain in the Faroes and follow the road down to Funningur, reputed to be the islands' oldest village. A number of photo-stops will be made along the way, including above Tórshavn to savour the beauty of this distinctively colourful capital. (Costs £84pp)

In addition, an optional guided citywalk of Tórshavn is available. Situated at the foot of the surrounding mountains the capital of the Faroe Islands was founded in 825AD and named after the Nordic god Thor. During this tour, guests will be told stories about the past and present as they wander through the charming old town and get a true sense of this compact capital. (Costs £16pp).

The four-night eclipse tour departs on 17th March and costs from £1299pp. This includes flights from London Stansted to Tórshavn with Atlantic Airways, taxes, transfers and any type of the above-mentioned accommodation. Based on two sharing.
