FREDERICKSBURG, Texas – The Texas Hill Country is famous for its rolling hills that explode with colorful wildflowers in the springtime. Another of Fredericksburg's main wildflower attractions is the nation's largest working wildflower farm – Wildseed Farms.
John R. Thomas, founder and president of Wildseed Farms, developed a machine to plant and harvest the tiny wildflower seeds and pioneered the practice of planting wildflowers in rows on large acreage.
The 200 acres of wildflower fields seven miles east of Fredericksburg on Highway 290 typically bloom from March through October, and typically attract more than 350,000 visitors per year. Visitors can explore walking trails through the fields, take photos amongst the bluebonnets and other wildflowers, shop at the Market Center, relax at the Brewbonnet Biergarten, or taste wines from across Texas.
Admission to Wildseed Farms is free. A small fee may be charged during peak times. Visitors can purchase wildflower seeds at Wildseed Farms or online, including over 90 varieties of wildflowers, grasses, herbs and exotic garden variety seeds.
