Perched on a hill in the far south-east corner of East Sussex is the picturesque town of Rye, steeped in medieval history and surrounded by rolling countryside and the sea to the south. Saturday 25th October sees the beginning of Wild Boar week in the town. A regular feature of the woods around Rye, the wild boar is celebrated in a week-long event which includes events, walks, talks and tours as well as over 20 venues showcasing wild boar and other medieval and game dishes on their menus. Visitors to the town have the perfect opportunity to indulge in culinary delights from bygone eras including pheasant, partridge, mallard, rabbit and venison.
Set in the middle of the High Street, The George in Rye, the only 4 star hotel in the town, is well-known for its laid-back luxury, welcoming atmosphere and fabulous food. There are 34 individually-decorated ensuite bedrooms - many with feature beds, roll tops baths and walk-in power showers - and a restaurant featuring seasonal produce sourced from the farms and fishermen around Rye and predominantly cooked on its wood-charcoal oven.
To kick off Wild Boar Week, The George in Rye will be hosting a comedy night on Friday 24th October courtesy of the long-established Lonestar Comedy Club. Described as “a mighty fine comic” by The Guardian, Tom Deacon headlines, supported by “New Act of the year 2012”, Pat Cahill. Doors open at 7:30pm, the show starts at 8:00 pm and tickets are £10 per person.
For the duration of the week the menu at The George Grill will include dishes such as seared Pigeon breast 'salade paysanne', with pan juice and sherry vinegar dressing, Wild Boar and chicken liver terrine with figs & Kentish cobnuts, and Josper-grilled Wild Boar burger in a brioche bun, with Cashel Blue and quince & chipotle sauce.
Rooms start from £135 for a Queen room and a three-course dinner in The Grill is approximately £35 a head with wine.
