The Landmark Trust is one of Britain's largest building conservation charities, dedicated to restoring historic buildings at risk and giving them new life by making them available for self-catering holidays, with rental income paying for the buildings' on-going maintenance.

Nicolle Tower - St Clement, Jersey - Sleeps 2 - £297, £50pppn (based on 2 sharing)

Nicolle Tower was built as a folly in 1821 with a pretty sitting room on the first floor. The tower stands 160 feet up, well back from the coast, with, it need hardly be said, views over the sea and island in every direction. The tower makes an excellent base for exploring the largest of the channel islands and makes an idyllic Valentine's weekend escape from daily life with beaches, castles, museums and country walks all within easy reach.

The Prospect Tower - Belmont Park, Faversham, Kent - Sleeps 2 - £657, £110pppn (based on 2 sharing) The Prospect Tower is a tiny, circular tower approached by an avenue of walnut trees standing deep on the boundary of a cricket pitch. The roof terrace gives a grandstand view of this peaceful corner of Kent countryside. A pefect place to share a bottle of wine whilst watching the stars after a day spent walking through the garden of Belmont Park.

St Winifred's Well - Woolston, near Oswestry - Sleeps 2 - £307, £52pppn (based on 2 sharing)

Hidden away down a short footpath is St Winifred's Well, in its secluded spot surrounded by woodland and built above a bubbling spring. It is perfect for complete escape, accompanied only by the sounds of the woods and the water. St Winifred was a 7th-century Welsh princess, sworn to a life of chastity, who was brought back to life by her uncle St Beuno, after being decapitated by an angry suitor as she fled from him to take refuge in a church. In the 12th century her body was taken to Shrewsbury Abbey, where many pilgrims came to benefit from her healing miracles.

Appleton Water Tower - Sandringham, Norfolk - Sleeps 2+2 - £798, £133pppn (based on 2 sharing)

This exceptional Victorian water tower is on the edge of the Royal estate. This functional building, makes a surprisingly comfortable nest among the tree tops looking across the Sandringham estate. Accommodation is stacked on the lower floors in the former custodian's dwelling and the roof offers is a view on all sides over miles of wide, open landscape, with even a distant gleam of the Wash.

Stogursey Castle - Stogursey, Bridgwater - Sleeps 4 - £758, £127pppn (based on 2 sharing)

This diminutive gatehouse still guards the bridge onto a moated island where only the ruins of a once great castle remain. It is hard to imagine a more picturesque setting. The castle ruins on the moated site are yours alone to explore, as is the little bridge from which to dangle your legs. Inside the gatehouse's thick walls, the sitting room has an open fire where you and your partner can enjoy your time with a warming cup of tea in the Old Chelsea china.

About The Landmark Trust

There have been many wedding proposals in Landmarks over the years. One example was when James proposed to his girlfriend Jess 5 years ago at Robin Hood Hut in Halswell, Somerset. They have been happily married ever since. He said:

"The location is amazing, you arrive via a wooded driveway, which makes you feel like you're entering a fairytale, once through the wood you are greeted to a truly majestic view out over the Somerset levels and beyond to the Bristol channel. The accommodation was perfect, it was the end of February when we visited; so once we'd lit a fire it was cozy and snug. When it came to popping the question, Jess was sat comfortably in one of the large arm chairs next to the fire, I sank to one knee and asked if she would marry me."

The Landmark Trust is a building preservation charity that rescues and restores architecturally interesting and historic buildings at risk, giving them a future by letting them for self-catering stays. The rental income pays for the buildings' upkeep but money to save other buildings at risk has to be found elsewhere.

There are nearly 200 Landmark Trust buildings in Britain with several in Italy and France.
