WHAT'S NEW
Summer at The Point debuts Flag Stop Theatre & Arts Festival
Now in its second season, Summer at The Point is a culmination of arts and cultural events held on the shores of Alta Lake at The Point. One of Whistler's most historic sites, the location of The Point Artist-run Centre Society is home to
what was once known as Cypress Lodge and later the Whistler Hostel.
New for 2012, the first annual Flag Stop Theatre & Arts Festival will take place on August 11. A floating stage on Alta Lake will feature theatre, music and improv performances that have been developed throughout the summer, as well as the debut performance of Agnes, a play by local writer Stephen Vogler.
Summer at The Point is a project conducted by The Point Artist-Run Centre Society in conjunction with the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
Wanderlust Whistler
Yoga and music phenomenon reaches new heights with the first-ever Canadian location for Wanderlust, taking place August 23-26.
Yogis from around the globe will be down-dogging, dancing, dining on organic delicacies, celebrating and joining together in an amazing community. With the world's leading yoga teachers, top musical acts and DJs, renowned speakers, top chefs and winemakers, Wanderlust Whistler is an event not to be missed.
Fostering relationships with local yoga rockstars, Wanderlust has invited lululemon athletica ambassadors to teach alongside its already amazing lineup inclusive of teachers Baron Baptiste and Sean Corne, musicians Michael Franti and Krishna Das, DJ set by Thievery Corporation, and performance artists Quixotic.
Enter to win a trip to experience Wanderlust - prize includes airfare, accommodation, four-day passes and more.
Celestial Cinema
Film lovers have another place to watch movies this summer - on the lawn, in the open air, under the stars at Whistler Olympic Plaza. Grab your blankets and lawn chairs and head to Whistler Village for free, outdoor film nights beginning after 8:00 p.m. All ages are welcome and all films are G or PG rated (General or Parental Guidance) - films will be a mix of crowd pleasers, audience and critic favorites.
With a strong history of serving as a cultural catalyst by bringing independent films and artists to the area, Whistler's new Celestial Cinema screening series is presented to you by Whistler Film Festival.
WHISTLER STORIES
Faces of Whistler - Brandon Semenuk
Whistler native Brandon Semenuk's achievements in the world of freeride mountain biking are impressive. Just 21 years old and one of the top ranked riders in the Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour, Semenuk's career has blossomed along with the mountain biking scene in his hometown. Having over 300 kilometres of trails and the Whistler Mountain Bike Park (oft-considered the world's best) as his "backyard", his career path seemed almost predictable.
So far in 2012 Semenuk has won first place in the last five slopestyle events he has entered. This season he seems unstoppable, performing highly technical runs with a super dialled and precise style. During the inaugural Crankworx Les Deux Alpes Freeride Mountain Bike Festival this past July in France; Semenuk took home first place for both
Slopestyle and Best Trick with just one run.
In 2011, Semenuk won the inaugural Red Bull Joyride slopestyle during Crankworx Whistler. Of the win, he was described as "someone who has been bred for this sport and comes out and shows us what being bred for this
sport means." Winning top spot on the podium at this history-making event was made all that much sweeter for Semenuk by winning it in his hometown.
