Wheelchair Tennis Aces Begin Build-Up To 2016 Paralympics At La Manga Club

La Manga Club

La Manga Club helped play a part in Great Britain's memorable Davis Cup victory against America last month, and the country's leading wheelchair tennis players are hoping the top Spanish resort will inspire them to similar success - ultimately at the 2016 Paralympics.

The elite squad of players and coaches will head to the prestigious sports and leisure resort at the start of April for a five-day warm weather training camp as part of their preparations for the BNP Paribas World Team Cup - the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup - in the Netherlands at the end of May and Rio in two years' time.

Taking place from April 5-9, the Tennis Foundation Wheelchair Performance Camp will not only work on players' techniques at La Manga Club's 28-court tennis academy but also focus on individual coaching and developing a team dynamic and inter-disciplinary culture.

Cain Berry, technical performance projects manager for the Tennis Foundation, said: "We're looking forward to visiting La Manga Club. We've received some very good feedback from previous Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) camps that have been held there and the resort has some quality facilities.

"As well as being a training block for players, the trip will be a good chance to enhance player programmes by working on individual and team coaching and collaboration to maximise the support to individual coaching team as we build for Rio.

"This is the first time we've held something like this abroad and we're interested to see how things work out. We'll carry out a full review of the benefits after our visit but, potentially, we could look to repeat these warm weather camps in the future in preparation for future events."

La Manga Club is the official overseas training base of the LTA, who used the award-winning venue before Christmas to help Great Britain's elite men's players prepare for their World Group last-16 Davis Cup tie against USA in San Diego - the first time they've beaten America since 1935.

In addition to hosting the game's elite players, the resort also runs a wide range of tuition courses and breaks throughout the year offering players of all ages the chance to perfect their techniques at its academy.

Widely regarded as Spain's flagship resort, La Manga Club is at the forefront of sports and leisure destinations across Europe and some of world's top sporting names have been among the visitors over the last 12 months.

From the world of football, the likes of Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Shakhtar Donetsk and Europe's top international ladies teams have all used the resort as a training base, with La Manga Club boasting first-class facilities including eight full-size football pitches.

With three 18-hole championship golf courses, La Manga Club has also established itself as a Mecca for golfers since opening in 1972 - it has been voted the best golf resort in Spain by readers of Today's Golfer magazine for the last three years - and will open a new Leadbetter Academy this spring, the only such facility in mainland Spain.

Set in an area three times the size of Monaco, the resort boasts unrivalled facilities as a sport and leisure venue with its extensive sports facilities complemented by outstanding leisure amenities including a 2,000sqm spa and fitness centre. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses, and more than 20 bars and restaurants.
