The Remarkable Tasmanian Devil
8 Dec - 6 May

It's said, better the devil you know. At the Tasmanian Museum and Gallery (TMAG) this Autumn, visitors have the opportunity to truly get to know the Tasmanian devil via The Remarkable Tasmanian Devil exhibition, which runs until 6 May, 2018. The exhibition takes a fresh look at scientific research, little-known histories and the fascinating behaviours of Tasmanian devils, appealing to all ages. There's an interactive, night-time simulation to give young naturalists a taste of being on the devil trail, and aims to instil visitors with a deeper understanding of Tasmanian devils, to prevent them suffering the same fate as the Tasmanian Tiger.

A Taste of the Huon
11 - 12 March

Get A Taste of the Huon on the 11th and 12th March, at the 26th annual food festival celebrating the Huon Valley and Channel region. Held at Raneleigh, 30 minutes south of Hobart, the festival celebrates the local crop, apples, as well as cherries, mushrooms, salmon, vineyards, berries and truffles. The entertainment program features a crowd-pleasing music and busking lineup, and kids will love the facepainting, balloon artists and performances.

International Mural Fest
1 - 7 April
Sheffield, in the foothills of spectacular Mount Roland in North-West Tasmania, is home to the International Mural Fest, an annual mural art competition and festival, this year held from 1 - 7 April, over Easter. Nine carefully selected artists compete in a 'paint off' in the main street from Easter Sunday to the following Saturday. The size of each artist's mural must be 2100mm x 4800mm and based around a poem, selected as the theme of the festival. Judges award a $15,000 prize to the winner and a $5,000 Highly Commended prize. It's fascinating to watch the artists in action and this year's theme poem, Our Wonderful World, promises to produce some thought provoking works. Each year, a previous year's murals are auctioned off, so visitors can also pick up a piece of the action to call their own.

Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint
6 - 8 April
Racing fans are revving their engines for the return of the Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint to Symmons Plains from 6 - 8 April. As round three of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, drivers and their teams will be keen to make a strong start to their season, producing some exciting racing. Kids under 12 are free Trackside with a paying adult, and there are a range of ticket options available - from Platinum Reserved Grandstand seating, to Trackside and Park & View (watch the race from the comfort of your own car!).

Cradle Mountain Film Fest
6 - 8 April
From the fringe of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the Cradle Mountain Film Fest screens the best adventure films from our state and around the world. Over the weekend of 6 - 8 April, the program includes the exclusive Tasmanian screen of Mountainfilm on Tour, the judging of the One Year in Tasmania Adventure Film competitions, film events for kids as well as workshops, Q&A sessions and even a self-guided walking program with screenings in the mountain huts around Cradle Mountain. When creativity and wilderness collide like this, the results are breathtakingly adventurous. Space is limited at some events so book ahead.

Flinders Island Food & Crayfish Festival
14 - 15 April
Flinders Island is luring chefs David Moyle (LongSong), Mark Labrooy (Three Blue Ducks), James Viles (Biota), Matt Stone (Oakridge), Jo Barrett (Oakridge) and sommelier Alice Chugg (Ettie's) for a very special long-lunch, the highlight of the Flinders Island Food & Crayfish Festival on 14 - 15 April. The chef dream team will spend five days exploring the island - diving, foraging and sourcing - ahead of the lunch, which is open to only 100 'off-islanders'. The location will be released 48 hours before the 'barefoot cocktail' event - the weather being the driver of where lunch will be served. Across the weekend, visitors can also enjoy the Loaves and Fishes lunch or cooking classes with Wendy Jubb Stoney on her property, Cooma House, sample crayfish pies at Pepperberry Cove or Pick and Party at Unavale Vineyard. Book ahead.

Turning of the Fagus
Late April - May
From late April until May, southern Tasmania celebrates the Turning of the Fagus - when the beautiful leaves of the Fagus tree leaves change from a rusty red to a brilliant gold colour. Fagus (also known as deciduous beech or tanglefoot) is Australia's only cold climate winter-deciduous tree and the only place in the world you will find it is in Tasmania. The easiest viewing is at Lake Fenton in the Mt Field National Park and on the Loop Track or Weindorfers Forest Walk at Cradle Mountain. The turn of colour usually starts by the end of April but it's a good idea to phone the national park ahead of time to confirm.

Targa Tasmania
16 - 21 April
With sports cars racing at exhilarating pace through closed backroads, it's no surprise that the Targa Tasmania event continues to grow after 27 years - this year the world class international motorsport event pits 300 cars against each other over 2000km and nearly 40 stages. Drawing from iconic motor races such as the Targa Florio, the Mille Miglia, the Coupe des Alpes and the Tour de Corse, our Targa Tasmania, from 16 - 21 April, features restored classic cars as well as the latest touring and sports cars hurtling through the track. With such a large course set in stages across the island viewing opportunities abound, so check the website for track and ticketing information.

Agfest Field Days
3 - 5 May
Organised by volunteers from Rural Youth Tasmania, the annual Agfest Field Days runs from 3 - 5 May, with over 60,000 visitors enjoying the fascinating agricultural event. All walks of life visit Agfest - for new machinery or to talk shop, to witness heritage arts, craft and farming skills, to see the amazing animals like sheep dogs and horses in action or to lap up the Tasmanian produce on offer. Held just outside Launceston, tickets are available now or on the day.
