Kenwood Inn & Spa reopens
Guests are once again enjoying the Mediterranean-style tranquility and luxury of the Kenwood Inn & Spa, tucked into the hillside at the northern end of the Sonoma Valley, in eastern Sonoma County.
Kenwood Inn & Spa sits on more than two and a half peaceful acres, surrounded by vineyards and ancient oaks. The beautiful inn was temporarily closed after the October 2017 wildfires — although the inn did not burn, it did suffer from the smoke and high winds.
The extensive remodeling included refreshing all 29 guestrooms and suites, and updating the lobby, cabanas, and other public spaces, as well as renovating the landscaping.
Some improvements are still in progress. A remodeled spa will be completed in the summer of 2018; until then, guests can enjoy treatments in an interim space. The inn's meeting and private event space is being renovated to provide groups and bridal parties with an expansive and elegant lounge.

EVENTS
City of Santa Rosa celebrates its sesquicentennial (150 years)
Honoring the past while looking to the future, the City of Santa Rosa in central Sonoma County is thriving as it celebrates its 150th year.
Six months after the October 2017 wildfires brought national attention to Santa Rosa, the city is flourishing. Recovery efforts are underway in the specific neighborhoods damaged by the fires, while new businesses abound citywide and the community is stronger than ever. There are plans to hold a series of lively sesquicentennial events throughout the year, culminating in September with a town celebration.
Sesquicentennial events began in March with the opening of a time capsule that was buried in the city's Courthouse Square at its Centennial Celebration in 1968. The capsule's contents are displayed at the History Museum of Sonoma County.
Next up is the annual Luther Burbank Rose Parade and Festival on May 18, under the theme Together We Rose. Then it's the Official Sesquicentennial Celebration Sept. 8 in the recently renovated Courthouse Square. Part of the festivities will include burying a new time capsule, to be opened in 50 years.

Garagiste Festival expands to Sonoma County
The Garagiste Wine Festival brings its unique micro-winery events to Sonoma County with the inaugural Garagiste Northern Exposure festival on May 12, in the town of Sonoma in eastern Sonoma County.
Based in Southern California, the Garagiste Wine Festivals celebrate undiscovered micro-wineries who produce handcrafted small-lot wines. The first Garagiste Northern Exposure festival showcases 40 excellent but hard-to-find wineries from Napa, Sonoma, Livermore, Lodi, and Mendocino, with more than 20 different varietals. More than 90 percent of the participating wineries do not have a tasting room, so this is a singular opportunity to taste their wares.
The term “garagiste” originated in the Bordeaux region of France to denigrate renegade small-lot wine makers, sometimes working in their garage, who refused to follow the “rules.” Now “garagiste” represents the cutting edge of small-production winemaking with no rules.
Ticket sales to Garagiste festivals are limited, creating a comfortable, uncrowded experience, and giving guests the opportunity to talk with the winemakers. Admission to the May 12 event will be $85 for early access tasting (1-5 p.m.); $65 for the Grand Tasting (2-5 p.m.); or $115 for early access tasting plus a VIP seminar and boxed lunch (11:30 a.m.-5 p.m.); group discounts are available.
Garagiste Wine Festivals is a nonprofit organization that supports scholarships to Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo.

Celebrating 50 years of goats and more at Redwood Hill Farm
The first milking parlor and bottling room opened in 1968 at Redwood Hill Farm – Capracopia, which this year looks back on five decades dedicated to sustainable, diverse, and humane farming practices in Sebastopol, in western Sonoma County.
Kenneth and Cynthia Bice moved their 10 children from Los Angeles to Sonoma County to go “back to the land” in 1963. In 1966 their children started raising and showing goats through 4H, resulting in an excess of fresh goat milk. In 1968 the Bices added the milking parlor and bottling room and began selling raw goat milk to local health food stores.
Oldest daughter Jennifer Bice and husband Steven Schack took over the dairy in 1978, which gradually evolved to selling goat milk products nationwide. Swiss dairy maker Emmi bought the creamery in 2015, and the Bice family focused on its original farm.
Today this small organic family farm is a model of land stewardship and animal care. In addition to its 300 milking goats, the farm includes an olive orchard, hop yard, fruit orchards, beehives, chicken laying flock, and vegetable gardens. Solar panels provide 100 percent of the electricity for the farm and two onsite homes, and a rainwater catchment system stores up to 100,000 gallons of winter rainwater, providing year-round water for the farm.
For this 50th anniversary year, farm tours are offered on selected Saturdays, from April 7 to June 10.

Taste Mengler Family Wines at Cellars of Sonoma
Savor the carefully handcrafted vintages of Mengler Family Wines in the Cellars of Sonoma tasting room in the town of Healdsburg, in northern Sonoma County.
Based on bringing family and friends together for the enjoyment of delicious, unique small lot wines, the winery uses only Sonoma Country fruit, only American barrels, and includes family and friends in the wine production endeavor. Owner Chris Mengler does most of the pruning, leafing, and trimming in the vineyards; family and friends do the harvesting, crushing, and destemming; and the winemaking process is finished on site.
Mengler Family Wines launched in May of 2017, and last year produced less than 700 cases of wines. Their signature wine, Rita's Block, won a Gold Medal at the 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. They also produce a Dolcetto, which just scored 91 points from Wine Enthusiast, and a Rose of Syrah that scored 89 points from Wine Enthusiast.
The Cellars of Sonoma tasting room features local vintners who produce small lots of wine, many of which are only a few hundred cases per varietal and not available in mainstream distribution.

GrapeSeed Wines pouring in Paul Mahder Gallery
The distinctive Paul Mahder Gallery in the Sonoma Wine Country town of Healdsburg now includes a wine tasting bar from GrapeSeed Wines.
Housed in an iconic double-Quonset with 30-foot-tall ceilings and more than 8,000 square feet of floor space, the Paul Mahder Gallery presents works, both small and large, by national and international artists in a museum-like setting.
Founded in 2015 by a small team of wine industry insiders who share a passion for artisan winemaking, GrapeSeed directly connects wine lovers to the finest winemakers around — individuals whose wines have consistently received the highest marks from the leading critics, including Robert Parker and Wine Spectator.
GrapeSeed partners sign up to get four shipments each year, choosing from one of four options — selections from the entire portfolio of reds and whites; a shipment of only red wines; a selection of the most age-able and collectible wines; or the Paul Mahder Portfolio collection with six bottles in each shipment. In addition to one-of-a-kind wines, GrapeSeed partners get behind-the-scenes access to Wine Country.

Rockpile Vineyards opens Healdsburg tasting salon
The new Rockpile Vineyards tasting lounge in downtown Healdsburg features small lot, single-vineyard wines from the Rockpile Vineyard itself, as well as fruit sourced from other spectacular vineyards nestled high above the fog in the Rockpile wine region in northern Sonoma County.
The Rockpile appellation gained official American Viticultural Area (AVA) status in 2002, and the Rockpile Vineyard in that wine region is located on the historic 800-acre Rockpile Ranch, established by Tennessee Bishop in 1865.
Although there was a vineyard on the property in 1872, for more than a century the property was used mainly for sheep and cattle ranching. The vineyard was planted again in 1992. Rockpile Ranch is now the newest property in the Wilson Artisan Wineries family of boutique Northern California wineries. The Rockpile Vineyards winemaking team includes Diane Wilson, Antoine Favero, and Chris Barrett.

DISTILLERIES
Spirit Works Distillery releases Bottled in Bond rye whiskey
In its quest for grain-to-glass craft spirits perfection, Spirit Works Distillery recently released its first-ever Bottled in Bond – Straight Rye Whiskey, meeting the strict guidelines for the rare “Bottled in Bond” label.
Among other requirements, to be labeled Bottled in Bond a spirit must be produced from the same class of spirits and materials (in this case, rye berries and rye whiskey); distilled in the same distilling season by the same distiller at the same distillery; stored for at least four years in direct contact with wood; void of any addition, subtraction, or modification; proofed to 100 proof with only pure water; and bottled at 100 proof.
Spirit Works Distillery's Bottled in Bond – Straight Rye Whiskey was bottled at four years two months old and 100 proof. It has a nose towards both bright and baked apple, followed with coffee and leather. On the palate it brings peppery hints of clove and nutmeg that mellow into a blend of caramel and toasted coconut. The finish of golden honeycomb rolls down to a long smooth spice.
Bottles are on sale at the distillery tasting room in Sebastopol, in western Sonoma County, and plans are to have them on the market in due course. Founded in 2012 by husband-and-wife team Timo and Ashby Marshall, Spirit Works Distillery handcrafts artisan Vodka, Gin, Sloe Gin, Barrel Gin, Navy Strength Gin, Straight Wheat, and Straight Rye Whisky onsite using hands-on, grain-to-glass methods.
