PENSACOLA � The retired aircraft carrier USS Oriskany will be laid to rest 22.5 miles off the coast of Pensacola in September to become the world�s largest artificial reef. This historic ship set records in gunnery marksmanship during the Korean War and was one of the Navy�s most heavily used aircraft carriers during the Vietnam War. www.oriskanymemorial.com
OCALA � The Appleton Museum of Art is proud to announce the opening of a prominent American sculptor�s first traveling exhibition on Aug. 28. Focusing on horses, artist Deborah Butterfield�s exhibition will include rarely seen examples of life-size horses made of sticks, mud, straw and metal and bronze castings. DELRAY BEACH � October 2004, Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens begins a celebration of the century-old connection between Japan and South Florida. It is here that a group of young Japanese farmers created a community intended to revolutionize agriculture in Florida. While most of the colony had left the area by the mid 1920�s, one settler remained - George Sukeji Morikami. He donated his land to Palm Beach County with the wish to preserve it as a park and to honor the memory of the farming colony they named Yamato, an ancient name for Japan.
