West Virginias Historical Resort Set To Host New PGA Tour

West Virginia

The Greenbrier, a 6,500 acre estate and award-winning resort located in the Allegheny Mountains in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia announced its newest chapter in golf history - a new PGA TOUR Event. Host to previous international golf events including The Ryder and Solheim Cups, the new golf event, deemed The Greenbrier Classic, will be part of the FedEx Cup and will take place July 26-August 1, 2010 on the resort's signature course The Old White.

Measuring almost 7,000 yards and playing to par 70, The Old White Course is expected to undergo minimal course modifications to add tees and enhance the practice facility. These minor changes will lead to great allure for golfers who rarely have the opportunity to play a PGA TOUR tested course. A National Historic Landmark, The Greenbrier represents 230 years of history with its classic architecture, unique interior design, sculpted landscape, service and wide range of amenities. It offers 634 rooms, including 33 suites and 71 guest and estate houses. The Greenbrier has 10 lobbies, over 40 meeting rooms and a complete conference centre facility. Guests enjoy over 50 recreational activities including three championship golf courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a 40,000 square foot spa, amongst other amenities.

The Greenbrier offers an interesting history in the late 1700s, the sulphur springs were discovered as a medicinal miracle and as word of their healing powers spread, more travellers came to the area. These visitors began building a cottage community in the early 1800s and in 1858, The Grand Central Hotel, commonly known as the Old White Hotel, was added to provide additional guest rooms and a dining room. In 1910, the C & O Railway purchased the property, including the cottages and hotel, for $150,000. That same year, construction began on the central portion of todays Greenbrier. During World War II, the property was sold to the US Army and became known as Ashford General Hospital. After the war, C & O repurchased the property and hired the renowned interior designer Dorothy Draper to completely redecorate The Greenbrier. The resort boasts over two centuries of famous guests, including 26 presidents, royalty, business leaders, politicians and celebrities. The Greenbriers archives are maintained and displayed in the Presidents Cottage Museum.
