Waterloo Bicentenary: Napoleon-Inspired Holidays

Utracks

With the spectacular re-enactment event to commemorate the Bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo only a few weeks away, if you are looking for a holiday this summer with a touch of Napoleon history, activity holiday specialists UTracks and Sherpa Expeditions can take you there…

Belgium Bike & Barge [NEW FOR 2015]
At the crossroads of Western Europe and the heir of several former medieval powers, the compact nation of Belgium might leave you surprised by its rich and fascinating heritage. Starting at picture postcard Bruges, nicknamed the 'Venice of the north' for its romantic canals, you will continue to the North Sea and on to medieval towns such as Ghent and Antwerp (with time en route to visit the market squares and sample waffles, chocolate and beer!), before finishing at Brussels, Belgium's bilingual capital, famous for its Grand Place, gothic-style town hall and baroque guildhalls. From here the Waterloo Battlefield where Napoleon lost his final battle is only a short train ride away!

Corsica Mountains and Sea
Dense 'maquis', mountain ridges and granite peaks that soar to 2,700m create a rugged terrain, tempered by deeply wooded valleys, pine forest and cascading streams. This route starts in Corte's old town, which clings to the steep slope below its majestic citadel, leading from the heart of the mountains to the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Along the way you will pass ancient villages that preserve century-old traditions and visit iconic rock formations such as Les Calanches. The trip concludes in Napoleon's hometown, Ajaccio: Casa Buonaparte, the house he was born in, is now open to the public, while the local airport is named after him.
