Expert and enthusiastic insight into Cornwall's multi-layered histories, including the industrial past, the flora, the fauna and the sumptuous coastal and country scenery are all opened up during a series of walking breaks which have the Budock Vean country house hotel at their heart.
Two guides with almost sixty years of in-depth knowledge between them have devised itineraries in May and September to give guests of the luxury hotel set in 65 acres on the Helford River, a view of Cornwall rarely seen even by the keenest-eyed walkers.
The breaks combine five nights of luxury accommodation, top-class facilities and great food with three days of guided walking on routes picked to explore the DNA of each place visited. The walks themselves focus on Cornwall's north and south coasts, the Lizard and Roseland peninsulas and the Celtic heritage of the far West - traversing woodlands and farmland, estuaries, bays and Unesco World Heritage Sites.
“There are so many unique layers that contribute to the stories of culture and identity of Cornwall,” says Paul Simmons of walkitcornwall, who is running the Budock Vean's first 2016 walking break from May 1. “These layers include the geology, estates, myths and legends, shipwrecks, smuggling and the fishing, farming and mining heritage. Cornwall has such a rich mix which we like to think nourishes the heart as well as the body and soul.”
“Cornwall has so many fantastic places filled with special wildlife and history and on our walks we help folk explore these hidden gems that they otherwise would never discover” says Steve Crummay of Explore In Cornwall, whose break runs from September 18th.
“It's fantastic that the new Poldark TV series has awakened world-wide interest in our amazing county – but there is much more to it than beautiful scenery: we are surrounded by the Cornish Mining World Heritage site and Poldark taps straight into that fascinating – not to say perilous - aspect of our history and our walkers always love to hear about it.”
The walks, in small groups of up to eight people, cover between six and nine miles each day – always finding one of Cornwall's fantastic eateries for the lunchtime break.
During any down time the Budock Vean offers unlimited golf and tennis, swimming and hot-tubbing or guests can book themselves in for relaxing treatments in the Natural Health Spa.
“Our walking holidays give guests a really full experience of what Cornwall is all about,” says the Budock Vean's owner Martin Barlow. “Paul and Steve are exceptional guides - full of fascinating insight and knowledge – so we know we're offering the very best in terms of the walks themselves, but there's also plenty of time for relaxing here in lovely surroundings and getting fortified with fantastic food to keep you going.”
The Budock Vean's 2016 walking breaks each run for five nights, from Sunday May 1 to Thursday May 5 departing Friday May 6 and from Sunday September 18 to Thursday September 22 departing Friday September 23. They cost from £650 per person in a Standard Room in May and include five nights' accommodation, four course dinners and full English breakfasts, a welcome drinks reception, three days of guided walks and transportation where necessary and full use of the hotel's leisure facilities.
