Vivat Trust Opens Castle House In Taunton

Vivat Trust Holidays

The Vivat Trust has just completed its latest project in partnership with the Somerset Buildings Preservation Trust. Castle House is in the heart of Taunton, Somerset and forms part of Taunton Castle. From the 6th December 2013 the house will provide characterful self-catering accommodation for 7 people.

Trust Director, Laura Norris says: "We are delighted to extend our range of historic properties in the Southwest. Castle House has a great central location making it ideal for city breaks or as a jumping off point to the coast and Exmoor National Park. Castle House is also conveniently located next door to the 4 star Castle Hotel making this the first Vivat property to be able to provide a full catering service for dinner parties and special occasions."

Castle House is a 16th century Grade I listed building that has been largely untouched for 300 years. Many historic features have been retained in the accommodation including restored floorboards and the Tudor south range which is now a spacious sitting room with the added ambience of a wood-burning stove. The house also has an infamous side to it, as it once was the lodgings for Judge Jeffreys, who officiated at the Bloody Assizes hearings after the Battle of Sedgemoor, during which many were sentenced to death or transportation.

The house also featured in TV's Most Haunted programme. No ghosts have been seen yet - but who knows?

Prices start from £517 for a 3 night break for up to 7 persons. Price includes a welcome food and wine hamper, all fuel (including wood for the wood-burning stove), linen & towels and mini toiletries.
