Visitors Came By The Millions In 2002

Preliminary visitor attendance and spending figures indicate that 41.8 million people visited Orange County and spent $6.4 billion throughout the county in 2002. The number of visitors increased by 2.2% compared to 40.9 million in 2001.1

Following is the percentage breakdown of the $6.4 billion generated throughout Orange County on travel related expenses in 2002: Meals & Beverages 27% Lodging 25% Shopping 24% Amusement 17% Transportation 5% Miscellaneous 2%

�The Bureau is continuing to aggressively promote our destination to meeting planners, leisure travelers, professional travel planners and the media,� stated Charles Ahlers, Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau president. �We are encouraged by 2002 visitor figures and approach 2003 with an optimistic attitude, but are somewhat cautious due to global uncertainty.�

�We have positive indications that both the domestic and international leisure markets are rebounding due to the large number of travel agents interested in our destination,� said Ann Gallaugher, director, tourism development for the Bureau. �Awareness and interest in Anaheim/Orange County is high, particularly since the Anaheim Angels won the 2002 World Championship. Tour operators are telling us that they anticipate visitor volume to increase by 2004.�

According to data excerpted from the Travel Industry Association of America�s Tourism Works for America, 11th Annual Edition 2002, California ranked number one overall in terms of total spending by domestic and international travelers, earning over $78 billion in expenditures. Rounding out the top three were Florida ($59.8 billion) and New York ($39.2 billion). The top three states where domestic travelers spent their money were California ($63.1 billion), Florida ($41.7 billion) and Texas ($32.3 billion). International travelers spent the most money in Florida ($18.2 billion), followed by California ($15.1 billion) and New York ($10.3 billion). 2
