About the world's only ice-bound hotel ship
Follow in the footsteps of polar heroes Nansen and Amundsen and sleep on board our ice-bound hotel ship in Tempelfjorden. Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen gives you the chance to experience the arctic wilderness like the explorers on the polar ship “Fram”, more than 100 years ago.
Ice-bound hotel ship
Far from civilization of Longyearbyen you will discover a level of comfort and facilities that are barely imaginable so far into the wilderness. Ship in the Ice has 10 well-equipped cabins with a total of 20 beds, hot/cold water, 220 V power supply, shower and toilet. The ship has two lounges and a fully-licensed bar. The lounges have a selection of polar literature. The ship’s chef prepares delicious meals every day, three-course dinners, freshly baked cakes and bread. Housekeeping is included in the room price and our staff will be at your assistance any time you need. A night on board the world’s only ice-bound hotel ship is a true polar experience.
Where and when?
The Ship in the ice is frozen in the Tempelfjorden about 60 km northeast of Longyearbyen. The ship is ready to host modern adventurers from the middle of February until the middle of May, depending on the ice conditions. We arrange both day trips as well as overnight trips to the ship in the ice. The ship’s location makes it also a unique starting point for accessing the wilderness, untouched Svalbard landscapes.
How to get there?
You can reach the ship in the ice either by snowmobile or dog sledges. You can only visit the ship in the ice only with guided tours. The trip to the ship goes through broad valleys and passes the mountains that are so typical of Svalbard. You will experience a landscape in shades of blue and white. You will experience stillness and quality of light that are found nowhere else. If you’re lucky, perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of the “King of the Arctic”.
More than 10 years of success
"On the Christmas eve the Noorderlicht was successfully frozen into the ice in the Tempelfjod in Spitsbergen. The hotel ship was ready to offer visitors an inspiring adventure, celebrating its 10th season in the arctic ice and the Nooderlichts 100 year's anniversary. The Dutch 120 foot schooner first set sail in 1911, the same year famed Norwegian Polar explorer Roald Amundsen reach the South Pole."
