This November get ready for another Scandi-fest with the hotly anticipated TV launch of the first season of Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' on BBC1 on 3rd November. A star studded cast includes James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby, Helen McCrory voicing Lord Asriel's daemon and David Suchet voicing another daemon. Billed as a thrilling 'Game of Thrones' successor, Season 1 covers 'The Northern Lights', the first book in the series, with production already under way for Season 2.
Those inspired by the series can take a trip with Best Served Scandinavia to Svalbard in Northern Norway, the setting and magical landscape of Philip Pullman's Northern Lights and the Arctic scene of Lyra's adventures. Svalbard is one of the best places in the world to glimpse the polar bears that inspired Pullman's magnificent Iorek Byrnison character. In this remote region in the depths of winter, the sun never appears above the horizon shrouding the landscape in an eerie blue glow.
This itinerary for Pullman aficionados showcases the best of it all with husky sledding trips, a walk through a secret glacier cave and a visit to a wilderness camp in search of the Northern Lights. The dogsledding adventure is along 12km of icy trails onto a glacier where there is a hidden ice cave reflecting the fantasy world of Pullman's vivid imagination. The itinerary includes a real wilderness experience at the cabins of Camp Barentz in the remote Advent Valley where tales of the island and its polar bears are told around a crackling campfire. There's an authentic reindeer dinner washed down with cake and fire-brewed coffee is served to ensure guests are alert to keep a lookout for the Northern Lights.
During the polar night season, it's possible to witness a Northern Lights display at any time of day or night ensuring a unique winter holiday adventure.
Best Served Scandinavia (0207 664 2241, best-served.co.uk) offers a four day Philip Pullman's Northern Lights break from £1,260 per person including flights, 3 nights' accommodation at the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis, a husky sledding excursion to an ice cave including transfers, expedition lunch and warm clothing and a Northern Lights evening at wilderness camp Barentz including transfers and dinner.
Svalbard is open all year round with the summer months offering a great choice of high-Arctic exploration and more frequent polar bear sightings. Unique flora adds extra colour to the tundra and plenty of wildlife-viewing opportunities. It's all more beautiful by the light of the Midnight Sun, which never once dips below the horizon between mid-April and mid-August.
A four day Svalbard Summer Adventure offers opportunities for glacier hikes or a fjord kayak expedition between mighty glaciers in a remote spot, with the chance to sight polar bears and walruses. For something completely different, you can also try summertime dogsledding on wheels or an electric fatbike trip.
Prices with Best Served Scandinavia start from £1,070 per person including flights from London to Longyearbyen, three nights at the Radisson Blu Polar on a bed and breakfast basis and a dog sledding on wheels in the Advents Valley excursion.
