With UNSECO recently adding Japanese cuisine, also known as “Washoku” to its Cultural Heritage List, this February is the ideal time to taste Kyoto’s culinary offerings during Kyoto Restaurant Winter Special. The annual event takes place throughout February, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy five-star Japanese food at affordable prices with 150 restaurants across Kyoto offering special menus.
Launched in 2010 with the intention of stimulating the restaurant industry and nurturing Japan’s unique food culture, this is the fifth annual Kyoto Restaurant Winter Special. It aims to give visitors a culturally enriching gastronomic experience as they taste various types of Japanese food, from tofu to kaiseki and from sushi to tempura.
As Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over 1000 years, it was at one stage the kitchen of the Imperial Court and still maintains some of the royal court cuisine. As a result, many unique Kyoto specialities will be on offer during Kyoto Restaurant Winter Special, for example “Kaiseki-ryori”, and a visit to Kyoto is not complete until one has sampled this multi-course banquet of seasonal delicacies. Moreover, as the centre of Japanese Buddhism for more than a thousand years, Kyoto has a multitude of temples which will be offering tourists the opportunity to dine in beautiful and peaceful settings during this time. With such a renowned cuisine, Kyoto is a must-see destination during February.
