Independence Day (4 July 2014) is one of the most iconic American federal holidays. The day celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the Founding Fathers' proclaimed the United States' freedom from Great Britain.
The state of Virginia, known for its award-winning wines, vibrant music scene and breathtaking scenery, revels in the patriotic activities put on over the Fourth of July weekend. However, it is not just about fireworks and flags; here is a selection of some of the newest and alternative festivities for all to enjoy in Virginia this Independence Day.
Rock Out at Spirit of America Laser Show
The new Laser Show at the Virginia Living Museum mixes classic patriotic music with an America-inspired rock and roll twist. Visitors can rock out to great artists like John Fogerty, Garth Brooks, Lee Greenwood and many more. The evening event is suitable for ages 6+ and runs hourly from 5-9pm priced at $10 for non-members.

Relax Under the Stars and Enjoy an Authentic Outdoor Theatre Performance
Come and experience the The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, the longest running outdoor musical drama in Virginia. Guests are invited to attend showings every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from the third weekend in June through to the fourth weekend of August, hosted at the June Tolliver Playhouse, located in the Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Credited as the official Outdoor Drama of Virginia, the drama is an epic love story filled with adventure and depicts the era of the early 1900s that saw the discovery of coal in the Appalachian Mountains.

Independence Day Wine Tasting at Veramar Vineyard
Spend Independence Day afternoon the old-fashioned way by picnicking and playing games in the sun whilst eating cultural iconic foods such as gourmet hotdogs and apple pie. An All-American Celebration at George Washington's Home
Those seeking an authentic 4 July experience can attend an all-day patriotic event hosted at the former home of America's first President, the historic Mount Vernon. An inspirational naturalisation ceremony for 100 new citizens is just one event kicking off the 4 July festivities, along with military re-enactments, birthday cake and even a visit from Mr and Mrs Washington impersonators.
Independence Day would not be complete without fireworks and a spectacular fireworks display illuminating the Potomac River is also part of the Mount Vernon's line-up. The day runs from 8 a.m. -5 p.m. and admission is $17 for adults, $8 for children aged 6-11 and children 5 and under are free.
