South Africa, Cape Town, November 2009; Vineyard Hotel & Spa To Celebrate Landmark Birthday By Planting 115 Trees With Trees4schools At Christel House
Already established as an international travel destination and recognised for its community involvement and environmentally conscious ethos, the Vineyard Hotel & Spa has teamed up with Fairtrade coffee brand Puro Organic Coffee to assist in greening Christel House. Puro Fairtrade together with parent coffee brand Miko Coffee have adopted the Trees4Schools Trust as their Corporate Social Initiative and hence the association and synergy with the Vineyard Hotel & Spa and Christel House.
Christel House School opened its doors for the first time in January 2002 with 300 learners thanks to the vision of American national and co-founder of RCI International, Christel DeHaan who wanted to break the cycle of poverty by equipping learners with tools to build a life of dignity, success and self-sufficiency. Today, the school has 575 learners from grades 1 through to 12 and 2009 marks the first class of Grade 12 to graduate.
Environmental Manager and Horticulturalist Chris van Zyl of the Vineyard Hotel & Spa is happy in the knowledge that the schools pupils will care for the 115 trees and comments further; Many of the scholars parents are employed to look after the extensive grounds and a big emphasis is on the school children taking ownership and being proud of their school. Larger trees will be planted in the courtyard and immediate school grounds and smaller trees along the perimeters of the extensive grounds. These trees not only provide and aesthetic component to the school but offer shade and importantly a wind break in an area that is harshly exposed to the elements. Miss Earth South Africa, Chanel Grantham was present at Friday, 18th Septembers to assist with the tree planting ceremony.
Christel House School is located at 21 Swallow Cliff Drive, off Old Strandfontein Road in Ottery. For more information on Christel House visit www.sa.christelhouse.org.
