Califa Vejer

Las Palmeras del Califa, the most sumptuous guest house hotel in the Andalucian town of Vejer de la Frontera has been given a fresh new look by owner James Stuart, following a top-to-toe refurbishment. It remains the only hotel in this historic town to have a swimming pool – and one that is exclusively available for guests' use. Widely regarded as being the best preserved of the 'Pueblos Blancos', Vejer has developed a strong gastronomic scene with a range of excellent restaurants, traditional cafés and tapas bars for guests to choose from.

The redecoration was led by local interior designer Ellie Cormié, who last year updated Vejer's award-winning Califa Tapas bar. Interiors now feature a strong sense of place, with Moorish influences that reflect the history of the centuries-old Andalucian town while, scattered throughout the property, are accents from colonial Africa that reveal the owner's roots.  Each of the hotel's six  rooms has been stylishly updated with natural fabrics and organic materials, while hanging in the 13th Century Arab Patio - already washed with natural light - is a show-stopping 6ft-tall lamp that, painstakingly, took two craftsmen two weeks to make.

Boasting scenic views from all of its bedrooms, Las Palmeras del Califa is set in the heart of Vejer's medieval quarter. Believed to have once been a merchant's house with a history that stretches back over 700 years, the hotel is spread over three levels. The beautiful Arab Patio forms a focal point of the hotel and is the oldest feature remaining of the original house. Sympathetically restored and redecorated, it is now a work of art in its own right.

Las Palmeras is best known as Vejer's only hotel with a pool, which can be used exclusively by hotel guests. From the pretty terrace of this hill-top town guests are treated to far-reaching panoramic views, over the rooftops to both Las Breñas Natural Park, a vast pine wood forest which runs down to the coast, and the Marismas Natural Park, a birder's paradise. Within easy reach are glorious sandy beaches, some of the most undeveloped in southern Spain.

All rooms are air conditioned, and come with the services that one would expect of the finest guest house hotel, plus all the services of the neighbouring La Casa Del Califa hotel.

The refurbishment of Las Palmeras is just one of the exciting developments for the Califa Group in 2019. Also coming this year are Plaza 18, a luxury boutique hotel designed by Nicky Dobree, and the Califa Hammam, the first hammam in the town for hundreds of years.
