Urban Spa-goers Enthralled by Colonial Charms of Metropole Spa

Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi

There is something irresistible about the French colonial architecture, the tropical light on the wood floors, and the utter luxury crafted into every corner of the Metropole Hanoi, so much so that one questions how the hotel's sensory experience could possibly be improved.

The answer came, of course, to the gradual awareness of Hanoi's residents and visitors following the debut of Le Spa du Metropole midway through 2009.

Comprising three levels and 400 square metres of Indochine-era elegance, the spa enticed jetlagged tourists and well-heeled locals with the promise of a world-class wellness experience in an exceptional setting.

With floors of dark hardwood, gilt-framed mirrors, paneled doors and double-slipper tubs, Le Spa is a vibrant echo of the hotel's well-established charm. Facilities include wet areas, a middle-eastern sauna or Hammam, relaxation lounges, a spacious foyer and an outdoor heated pool.

Nestled within seven private treatment rooms, including five distinctly themed suites, Le Spa's team performs signature body and beauty treatments using French skin-care product line Clarins, and Ytsara, a high-end spa product line from Thailand focused on body care treatments.

A year after its soft opening, the spa in the 110-year-old Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi scooped up its first award - a spot on the 2010 Hot Spa list from prestigious Conde Nast Traveler magazine. "The spa feels like an elegant friend's residence, with grand staircases leading to candlelit havens for Eastern-themed massages and facials," wrote one of the editors at Conde Nast Traveler.

Le Spa's menu opens with a suite of wet bath treatments and segues to a la carte spa journeys. Several of the spa's treatments are singular to Hanoi's urban situation and its storied appeal as a shopping destination.

After walking the '36 Streets' of the city's Old Quarter, Le Spa lures the weary with an 'After Shopping Leg Reviver.' Its 'Jetlag Recovery Massage' employs a Kansu bowl to ease muscle tension, while 'aromantic' treatments for two are followed by luxurious baths, chocolates and dinner.

Touted by guests as an "oasis of tranquility" in the heart of busy Hanoi, Le Spa du Metropole celebrated its second major recognition from industry experts last month, when it went home from the 2011 AsiaSpa Awards with the trophy for Best Urban Spa of the Year. The win underscored the spa's unique appeal among regional competitors.

"There are certain expectations and traditions that must be honored at the Metropole," said Kai Speth, the hotel's general manager. "Part of the allure to this spa is the allure of the hotel itself, and the delight that comes from being in that space, and having a treatment at the Hotel Metropole Hanoi."
