Urban Adventures, the global day tour company that gives travellers unique local experiences is now equipping travellers with a series of free travel apps. Hand-picked by the local teams in destinations around the world, the places in the apps are truly local, and not the types of places you’d find listed in other, more general travel apps or guidebooks.
The destination-specific apps, called “Urban Adventures Treasure mApps”, were designed to give travellers the best local knowledge in the palm of their hands. Built using Everplaces’ travel app platform, the Treasure mApps feature approximately 40 specifically selected places per destination, including the best spots for happy hour, perfect places for people watching, where to find unique souvenirs, and other hidden gems around the city.
The first twelve destinations are live in the iTunes store: Melbourne, Toronto, Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague, Rio de Janeiro, Hanoi, Paris, Los Angeles, Florence, with NYC and Lisbon added just this week. Within the first three weeks of going live, Apple featured the Melbourne app in the iTunes Store as one of the top travel apps in Australia. Since April, the first ten apps have been downloaded over 5,800 times, with LA proving to be the most popular with 1,300 total downloads.
Urban Adventures used Everplaces’ progressive platform technology to provide visually appealing, information rich apps, which display places in both a visual list and on a city map, accompanied by a short description. All Urban Adventures apps feature geo-fencing technology that lets you know when you’re within about 100 metres of any of the places on the app.
“Our customers are curious wanderers and we’ve built our Treasure mApps to cater to their style of travel. They wander where they want, and if they get near something we think is the best in the city – they get a notification and can decide whether it’s something they want to experience. It’s much more fun that way,” said Urban Adventures’ General Manager, Tony Carne.
The apps also inform you when you’ve arrived in another city in which Urban Adventures has tours. Each app works offline, a feature developed with international travel in mind, and includes the meeting point for the local Urban Adventures tours, with the ability to book tours either by phone or online via Urban Adventures’ mobile optimized booking pages.
“Our core mission at Urban Adventures is to give anyone interested in exploring a destination the absolute Best. Stay. Ever. Our local operators are passionate about having others love their city as much as they do, as any of the 100,000+ travellers who have been on one of our tours will tell you. We wanted to transfer that service online as well, to extend the value we offer our travellers,” said Carne.
Currently available for iPhone only, Urban Adventures Treasure mApps will be launching soon for the following cities: Hong Kong, Mexico City, San Francisco, Sydney, Bangkok, with many more of Urban Adventures’ operating destinations to follow throughout the year. Updates to existing apps occur every few months, to ensure the information is current.
