UNPLUG FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH A DIGITAL DEXTOX IN CYPRUS
Â
Results from the Cyprus Tourism Organisation revealed
Â
- New research released by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation sees almost one in five people admit that when on holiday they are too preoccupied uploading pictures and updating their status, rather than experiencing the holiday they are updating about
Â
- With 'selfie' recently named the word of the year, more than a quarter of those between 16 and 44 years old admit the only photos they take on holiday are selfies which don't even show where they are
Â
The Cyprus Tourism Organisation has commissioned a survey to shine a light on the Brits' attachment to their mobile devices and to understand why it can take time to switch-off from life back home, when on holiday. The results were astonishing, showing that millions are missing out on life as they rush to document their every move on social media.
Cyprus offers an ideal destination in the eastern Mediterranean – only a four-hour flight away from London.
Key findings from the survey include:
- The Brits' love for social media has become so all-consuming that one in five adults now admit they spend so much time uploading pictures and updates that they are actually missing out on life experiences
Â
- That's according to new research which shows that number rises to more than one in three 16-44 year olds
Â
- And as the term 'selfie' becomes common place in conversation, almost one in seven admit their holiday snaps now almost solely consist of selfies where it's difficult to tell where they have even been, with more than a quarter of 16-44-year-olds admitting to doing this.
Â
- The research shows as many of us get set to head off on holiday, we will be attached to our devices despite the promise of spending time with family and friends and experiencing new things.
Â
- More than a fifth get frustrated when friends and family spend their whole holiday attached to their phones (this is the case even more so for women compared to men 25% vs 19%).
Â
- And cementing our obsession with Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, one in five say they log onto social media whilst on holiday because they are worried about missing out on something back home and more than half of 16-44 year olds like to upload photos to Facebook and Instagram to share their holiday with friends and family back home.Â
Â
Â
Even if you are obsessed with 'selfies', Cyprus offers the perfect backdrop, which is a warm and laid-back island, allowing the rest of your senses to revitalise themselves.
