UK Media Bowled Over by Tenerife Invite to 'Golf Cool'

The holiday island of Tenerife has added to its growing collection of admirers after a group of the UK's leading golf media took up the invitation to 'Golf Cool' this summer.

Journalists from established publications including Golf International, Golf Monthly, National Club Golfers and Golf News joined the likes of the Top 100 Golf Courses website in eagerly taking up the invite from Tenerife Tourism Corporation (TTC) – and they were overwhelmed with what they were saw during their five-day visit.

The 'Golf Cool' invitation was based around demonstrating four key factors; better value green fees, ideal golfing temperatures, quieter golf courses and longer days, giving the media the perfect opportunity to experience five of Tenerife's nine different and varied layouts.

In addition to playing 18 holes each at Golf Costa Adeje, The Ritz Carlton Abama, Las Americas, Golf del Sur and Tecina Golf on the beautiful island of La Gomera, the group also had the chance to enjoy a trip to Teide National Park – home of Mount Teide, Spain's largest volcano – as well as sampling a mixture of Tenerife's best-value restaurants and accommodation options.

Brian Ward, from Top 100 Golf Courses, said: “What a fabulous destination to go and enjoy some golf during the summer months. The island offers a great variety of courses that are well-priced – particularly during the summer months – and crucially enjoy a climate which makes them very playable. Like others in the group, I thought Tenerife might be too hot for golf in July and August, and that's simply not the case.”

A spokesman for Tenerife Tourism Corporation said: “It was a pleasure to host such a delightful group and show them the many delights that our island has to offer.

“Many people know all about Tenerife as a winter holiday destination but it's important that they realise there are many reasons why you should come to the island in the summer as well, and trips like these are vital in the education process.”

Tenerife has won widespread praise as an all-year-round golfing destination over the last few months and, having staged the Fred Olsen Challenge de España on the Challenge Tour in May, is set to grab more headlines when Golf Costa Adeje hosts the Spanish Ladies Open from September 18-21.

It will be the second year in a row that the largest of the Canary Islands has provided the venue for one of the biggest events on the Ladies European Tour after Australian Stacey Keating beat Germany's Caroline Masson in a play-off at Las Americas last year.

Blessed with average summer temperatures of 23⁰, more than 70km of beaches and a wide range of cultural highlights and activities both on and off the water, Tenerife offers the ideal location for a golf break over the coming months.

With longer daylight hours, golfers visiting in summer will have ample opportunity to indulge their favourite pastime and also immerse themselves in the spirit of Tenerife, whether sightseeing or sipping a cocktail from their sun-lounger.

Tenerife features nine different and varied layouts: Buenavista in the west; Real Club de Golf de Tenerife in the north; and Golf Costa Adeje, Abama, Las Americas, Golf del Sur, Amarilla, and Los Palos in the south. Tecina Golf is a 40-minute ferry ride from the mainland on the beautiful island of La Gomera.
