... and Liepaja, Latvia

The long-awaited internal flight by AirBaltic to the city of Liepaja is scheduled to begin on 18. May writes Eva Staltmane.

Liepaja is the third largest city in Latvia with about 86,500 inhabitants. Located on a narrow strip of land between a lake and the sea, the city is unusual by any standards. www.liepaja.lv The city has a wonderful white, sandy beach, while the centre boasts some nice examples of Art Nouveau architecture, well-preserved wooden buildings and the Holy Trinity Church, with the biggest mechanical organ in Europe. Known as the Place where the wind is born, Liepaja attracts windsurfers, kite enthusiast, yachtsmen and gliders. During the Soviet period the city was a major military base and a closed city for around 40 years. This in turn had impact on the areas cultural and musical development. It still has dynamic and distinctive cultural life with many art and music festivals. The Most popular now is The Baltic Beach Party an international rock music festival. www.pablo.lv The Karaosta district offers an impressive military heritage including large naval forts built in the 19th century, a military prison hotel and the acclaimed historic reality performance Behind the Bars. www.sovietprison.com Outside the city borders one can find the regions famous blue cows (a rare breed) and the Pape Nature Reserve with wild horses, bulls, rare birds and sand dunes. www.wwf.lv
