Travel Reviews Site Announces Writing Competition Winner

Silver Travel Advisor

The travel reviews and information site, Silver Travel Advisor (www.silvertraveladvisor.com) has announced Jean Burnett as the winner of its first writing competition, ran in collaboration with Journeys Magazine, the experiential travel publication.

Entrants of the competition were asked to send a 500 word feature to Journeys Magazine about an amazing ecounter from a journey or travel experience, something that would stay in their memories forever. First prize was the opportunity to have the feature published in Journeys December 2013 issue.

Judged by editor Sue Bryant and the Journeys editorial team, the competition was won by Jean Burnett, who has lived for several years in the USA and now lives in Bristol. After Jean’s children grew up, she backpacked around the world for a year following in the foosteps of 19th century women travellers. Her adventures included tap dancing in a haunted museum in France, staying in a rundown Maharajah’s home in Jaipur, and hiding in the back of taxis in Cuba.

Angie Curtis and Paulina Slater, who both previously attended a Silver Travel Advisor travel writing workshop, are the runners up.

Sue Bryant says: “Not only was Jean’s journey to the mountains of Georgia a fascinating story, but we loved the way she handled dialogue and brought the characters she encountered to life. The ethos of Journeys is to let the local people tell the story and we felt Jean did this perfectly.”

Silver Travel Advisor is once again encouraging aspiring travel writers to attend their travel writing workshop, to be held on 5th March 2014 hosted by cruise line Noble Caledonia at their offices in Belgravia, Central London, at a cost of £59 per person.

The course runs from 10.30am – 2.30pm and covers motivations and inspirations for travel writing, and there are plenty of opportunities to review sample articles and to write creatively. The subject of blogging is explored with tips and advice on setting up your own blog and a session of Q&A with tutors, Deborah Stone and Nick Dalton who are both award winning travel journalists.

Places on the workshops are limited and can be booked at service@silvertraveladvisor.com stating the number of places required. For further information, visit www.silvertraveladvisor.com/workshop.
