GUYANA: THE LOST WORLD

Even today the little-known South American country of Guyana remains uncharted territory for man, boasting around 85% forest cover from one of only four primary rainforests in the world. Perhaps it comes as no surprise then that this mysterious land of dense jungle and hidden corners was the inspiration behind Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World.

Ancient tepuis (table-top mountains) erupt from the jungle canopy while the thick forest itself hides even the world's largest single-drop waterfall; Kaieteur Falls. Though Guyana is home to giants such as jaguar, giant river otters, anaconda, giant anteaters and the harpy eagle, visitors will be hoping that the prehistoric giants from Conan Doyle's novel remain purely fiction.

Wildlife Worldwide's 'Guyana: A Pristine Wilderness' tour takes travellers to explore the depths of this lost world. The 15-day tour is priced from £5,845 per person includes international flights, internal transport, accommodation and most meals. www.wildlifeworldwide.com / www.guyanatourism.com

EFTELING, HOME OF FAIRY TALES

Efteling, the fairy-tale theme park in the south of Holland, is the ideal place to visit this World Book Day. Those looking for a literary-themed short break can explore Efteling's unique storybook atmosphere, natural surroundings, and the wide range of attractions inspired by stories written by famous writers including Hans Christian Andersen, the brothers Grimm, and Charles Perrault.

Children and adults will love taking a stroll through Efteling's Fairytale Forest, where they can see all the traditional family-favourite stories including Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty and Little Red Riding Hood. The most recent addition to the Fairytale Forest, 'The Six Swans', is based on the Brothers Grimm tale and is the first to feature a 'mini' ride. The scene features six boat-shaped swans suitable for the younger visitors to ride. Families visiting Efteling will also be able to experience the pranks of the naughty boys, Max & Moritz, on the new double family roller coaster which is set to open this spring.

Book-lovers will enjoy becoming the stars of their own fairy-tale at the Efteling Hotel, where themed family suites include the Cinderella Suite, Sleeping Beauty Suite and a Hans Christian Anderson Suite. Overnight visitors should also make sure not to miss story-time with Mr Sandman at Efteling Holiday Villages Bosrjik and Loonsche Land, as well as the Efteling and Loonsche Land Hotels, during which he will share his favourite stories with Efteling's youngest visitors.

For parents who want to keep their children to stay tuned in to the best stories, Efteling has developed a special app from where they can listen to some of Efteling's most popular fairytales – great for those travelling from abroad.

A two-night stay in a six-person village house in Holiday Village Efteling Bosrijk is priced from £550 based on arriving on 13 March 2020. The price includes unlimited entrance to the park. Return flights from London Stansted to Amsterdam start from £84. www.efteling.com

WONDERLAND DINING ON ROYAL CARIBBEAN'S ANTHEM OF THE SEAS

Fans of Alice in Wonderland can eat a meal worthy of the Mad Hatter's Tea Party at Wonderland – a dining concept inviting guests to venture down a figurative rabbit hole. Wonderland offers diners 'never-seen-before' cuisine crafted by chefs inspired by the fantastical story of Alice in Wonderland. The diner's story begins as they 'brush' the menu to find their element – wind, ice, fire, water, earth and dreams – each with a selection of small and shareable dishes. Baby vegetables sit in a garden of soil and pebbles, smoked salmon eggs appear in a plume of smoke and crispy caviar mingles with arctic equator chocolate.

Royal Caribbean is offering holidaymakers 60% off their second holiday when they buy one cruise on bookings up until 31 March 2020. Guests can also save up to £125 on their stateroom and enjoy children's fares priced from only £99. Anthem of the Seas sails from Southampton on 23 May on a six-night France and Spain itinerary stopping at Le Havre (for Paris), Bilbao and Gijon in Spain. Prices from £1375 per person (cruise only) with the second cruise from £549 per person.
