Townsville Verses Wollongong in Social Media Showdown

Think! Social Media

The social media 'State of Origin' heats up this week as QLD and NSW go head to head in the Facebook-hosted destination showdown. The winner will be prized with Australia's first Social Media Tourism Symposium (SoMeT).

SoMeT is a premier conference for tourism professionals looking to share ideas, network and discover opportunities in social media for destination marketing.

SoMeT was first hosted in the US in 2009.

Over 6000 unique votes were registered in the semi-final between Brisbane and Wollongong last Thursday as the state rivalry began to boil.

Think Social Media Executive Director, Rodney Payne said that the destinations will have to have a strong strategy ready to roll once voting starts. Voting opens today at 9am NSW time and 8am QLD time.

"We have condensed the voting time from 24 hours to 12 hours giving a competitive boost to today's Grand Final," said Mr Payne.

Townsville has boasted their 300 days of golden sunshine, while Wollongong is bragging about their first-class skydive over the beach.

"It has been fantastic to see communities come together and rally for votes. This state verses state show down is set to be huge," Mr Payne said.

Grand Final voting runs 9am - 9pm NSW time (8am - 8pm QLD time) today, Wednesday 6 March.
