Cruise and educational tourism will be key themes showcased at the Townsville North Queensland stand at the Australian Tourism Exchange this year.

Townsville Enterprise General Manager Tourism & Events, Patricia O'Callaghan, said the new products have been developed for the cruise industry and to showcase the Region's 'edutourism' experiences.

“16 new educational tourism experiences leveraging off the Region's key strengths around landscapes, marine, wildlife and sustainability have been developed and included in the Learn Townsville North Queensland product manual,” Patricia said.

“In addition to these new products, a three day professional development short course with James Cook University has been created. The course offers immersive educational experiences within these four themes.”

The Region is well positioned for educational tourism and has emerged as a destination of excellence in this field with Reef HQ Aquarium, the National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Australian Institute of Marine Science and world leading James Cook University all located in Townsville.

The new products have been established in partnership with the Region's tourism operators and education and research providers to make lifelong learning accessible.

The new Townsville Cruise Ship Terminal will be completed in October 2013 and passengers can choose from a selection of half day and full day shore excursions showcasing genuine Australian experiences.

“The Townsville North Queensland Region has everything from a tour of the World Heritage listed rainforest and Australia's first carbon neutral resort and behind the scenes experience at the world's largest living coral reef aquarium to getting 'hands on' with native wildlife.”
