Sustainability expert, Green Tourism, is calling on the tourism sector to showcase their sustainable approach to business in a bid to attract a growing number of responsible travelers in light of the Brexit vote.
With two thirds (67%) of the UK's visitors from EU states, the impact of Brexit has left the industry counting the cost of an uncertain future. It is therefore more important then ever that businesses look to improve efficiency and productivity, to not only strengthen the bottom line but to help raise green and economic standards in the tourism sector across the UK and Europe.
That's according to Green Tourism that works with 2000 businesses across Europe to implement sustainable practices. The impact of practicing sustainable initiatives has been proven to generate greater economic benefits for the business, local communities and provides a more enjoyable experience for tourists by creating meaningful connections with local people.
Jon Proctor Chief Executive at Green Tourism explains: “According to World Travel Market, 36% of UK holidaymakers consider the environment and sustainability when choosing a holiday destination. In light of Brexit, it is more important than ever that businesses highlight their unique selling proposition. We know that responsible travelers is a growing consumer segment so it makes sense to work to create a niche in what will be a challenging time for the sector in the coming months and years.”
One business that has fully embraced the Green Tourism approach and who has seen the positive impact of sustaining trading is Jolly Days Camping, in Yorkshire. The luxury campsite sources food locally where possible, engages with nearby schools, neighbours and local businesses, conducts effluent water treatment onsite, uses off-grid renewable energy and recycles materials and packaging to minimise waste.
Jon continues, “Already we are operating in some great destinations in the UK and Ireland and we will continue to develop with partners in other areas where our endeavors are appreciated and we can deliver clear environmental improvements. Last year we highlighted a 28% carbon saving since 2010 and we will continue to grow and develop.
“Brexit can bring with it the potential for new international opportunities if we act positively, the UK can be a leading force for a more sustainable future and we hope we can develop the relationships needed to tackle climate change, support sustainable tourism and international development and make the best use of our European and international talents to be a great and successful economy.”
