Tottenham Hotspur to Play Sydney FC in May

Destination NSW

Destination NSW in association with ANZ Stadium has secured an exclusive blockbuster match for Sydney featuring legendary English football club Tottenham Hotspur, Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase has announced.

Tottenham will play Sydney FC on Saturday 30 May at ANZ Stadium, which will end a bumper week of sport in Sydney, with the Waratahs playing the Crusaders in a Super Rugby Grand Final rematch on Saturday 23 May, and the first match of the State of Origin series taking place on Wednesday 27 May.

“Tottenham Hotspur has been a football institution for over 130 years, and I am delighted they will be playing exclusively in Sydney in just a few months' time. The Spurs have promised to bring a full-strength squad to Sydney, and with Sydney FC in great form at the moment it will be a tremendous match,” Ms Chipchase said.

“The game will be a must see for all football fans, and is expected to contribute more than $8 million to the State economy in visitor expenditure,” she said.

This match continues the recent history of major European football teams secured exclusively for Sydney by Destination NSW, with English champions Manchester United visiting in 2013 and Italian giants Juventus playing in Sydney last year.

“The Tottenham Hotspur game is part of an events calendar that is packed with major sporting matches secured for NSW, including the State of Origin, ICC Cricket World Cup, Bledisloe Cup, Netball World Cup, Touch Football World Cup and many more,” Ms Chipchase said.

“The event will also co-incide with Vivid Sydney, the Southern Hemisphere's largest festival of light, music and ideas, so visitors to NSW for the match will also be able to take in Vivid while they are here,” she said.

ANZ Stadium Managing Director Daryl Kerry said the visit by Tottenham Hotspur ensured Sydney would host its third successive international football super club.

“Sydney is a big events city and this is a match that will capture the imagination of sports fans around the country as well as internationally,” Mr Kerry said.

“As many as 200,000 fans can be expected through the gates at ANZ Stadium during the last week of May, that also includes the NSW Waratahs' Super Rugby Grand Final rematch and the crucial game one of State of Origin featuring the NSW Blues,” he said.
