Sydney, 24 November 2022 – A topping out ceremony was held atop of the Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel today, signifying construction reaching level 13, the building’s highest floor.
Set to be the first Moxy Hotel to open in Australia for Marriott International, construction of the $140M project has been delivered by Sydney-based construction company Roberts Co, who was appointed by the project’s joint venture owners RF Corval and KS Hotels & Resorts.
Designed by MAED. COLLECTIVE and Group GSA, the hotel is located directly alongside Sydney Airport and will feature 301 guest rooms, the Moxy Kitchen and lively Moxy Bar – which will serve as a buzzing communal space and check-in area. It also includes 199sqm of meeting and event space.
The hotel is placed to shake up the hotel market at the airport, with the playful and next-gen Moxy brand.
The 2,997sqm site is conveniently positioned on a major thoroughfare into both the Sydney domestic and international terminals, catering to both corporate and leisure traveler demand.
Sean Hunt, Area Vice President from Marriott International said he was excited to see construction reach its highest point, given it was a landmark project for the company.
“The playful Moxy brand is one of Marriott International’s fastest growing brands in the Asia Pacific region – and we have four more in the pipeline in Melbourne, Perth, Auckland and Queenstown. With air travel now at 77% of pre-Covid levels and continuing to grow, Moxy Sydney Airport is located here in the heart of Australia’s international and domestic visitor gateway.”
Facing challenges that included Covid lockdowns and unprecedented wet weather across the programme, Chris Boys, Director-Hotels at RF Corval was happy to reach such an important milestone.
“Celebrating the Topping Out today is testament to our team who have continued to push through challenging conditions, we look forward to hosting our first guests when the doors open mid next year.”
Roberts Co’s CEO, Alison Mirams, said the project allowed the company to continue delivering its innovative construction practices.
“36 percent of this project team are females, including 50 percent of the team’s engineers, all led by our female Project Manager.
“This is the third project we’ve delivered under the 5-day week model and our first in the private sector. We’ve found this model leads to improved staff happiness as like in other industries, the team greatly benefit from spending their weekends with friends and family, which results in their improved mental and physical well-being benefitting us as a company, as well as our clients.
The Moxy Sydney Airport is scheduled to open in mid-2023.
