Adventure travel specialist World Expeditions is encouraging travellers to consider 'alternative' accommodation options on their travels this year. From a geodesic hotel room to a ger, below the company lists its top five ways to experience the best in luxury camping.
- Torres del Paine, Patagonia
The world's first geodesic hotel room, EcoCamp Patagonia has been modelled on the traditional Kawesqar hut of the native people. A collection of striking, comfortable dome tents, it is perfectly immersed in the wilderness of Torres del Paine, with ceiling windows that allow to look up at the starry night sky. The award winning EcoCamp Patagonia is situated in the very heart of Torres del Paine National Park and provides the region's first fully sustainable accommodation, complete with green technology.
STAY THERE: Torres del Paine EcoCamp (6 days) departs September-May
- Everest and Annapurna, Himalaya
Since 2011, World Expeditions has invested in a series of permanent campsites in the Everest and Annapurna regions of Nepal. The new accommodation options are not only designed to increase travellers' comfort levels but also to cater better to the needs of a growing market that is interested in a softer approach to trekking, such as first-timers to the Himalaya. Staying at the campsites, which number more than a dozen, is now included in all World Expeditions trips to Annapurna and Everest at no additional cost.
STAY THERE: Trek Annapurna and Everest (15 days) departs September-April
- Gobi Desert, Mongolia
The Gobi Desert is one of the last few wildernesses on earth, with unique and untouched features such as, windswept sand dunes, ancient dinosaur relics, solid ice formations, and of course, Mongolia's famous wild horses. It is here that you can find the original mobile home, the 'ger'. The circular tent is an age-old tradition of the Mongolian nomads. Made from a wooden frame and covered by wool felt, keeping it warm in the winter and cool in the summer, it is very easy to collapse and re-assemble again. 'Gers' can be easily transported on three animals – horses, camels or yaks!
STAY THERE: Gobi Desert Explorer (5 days) departs June-September
- Okavango Delta, Botswana
Combining a variety of different habitats including, swamp, wetland, dry woodland and arid plains, the Okavango Delta is home to a wealth of diverse wildlife. In the day, enjoy the game drives, cruises, and excursions before relaxing in private designated campsites to enjoy the lingering ambience of the African sunsets. This fully serviced, safari-style mobile camping enjoys spacious and comfortable canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms, camp beds, and bedding in addition to a dining tent and furnishings to help you relax after the excitement of seeing elephant herds, hundreds of birds, plains animals, and predators.
STAY THERE: Botswana in Comfort (4 days) departs March-December
- Red Centre, Australia
In a move to deliver previously unavailable levels of comfort to trekkers in a climate known for its temperature extremes, World Expeditions has launched a series of architect-designed, semi-permanent campsites on the iconic Larapinta Trail. In addition to using new sustainable technologies, the colours, building materials, and the overall style blend in with the surrounding environment aesthetically. The structures are designed to allow the land to recover during the off-season, maintaining the idyllic natural setting of these wilderness sites.
STAY THERE: Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort (6 days) departs April-September, self- guided options also available
