New York, New York − A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, the 2014 Tony Award winning Best Musical has joined the Broadway Collection. Darko Tresnjak directs and Peggy Hickey choreographs this uproarious new musical comedy, which began previews October 22, 2013 and officially opened on November 17, 2013 at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre.
A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is set in England's elegant Edwardian era and provides both a comical and revealing look at how low any of us might stoop to get to the top. It tells the story of Monty Navarro, a handsome young man who, upon the death of his mother, discovers he is both part of a noble family and in line to become the next Earl of Highurst. The only complication, there are eight other predecessors! Tony award winning Jefferson Mays gives “the year's greatest musical-theater performance,” (The New York Times) as the musical unfolds, playing all eight doomed heirs, each of whom Navarro eliminates in creative and side-splitting ways. Added challenges for Navarro include his conniving mistress, fiancée who doubles as a cousin, and the constant threat of the law in this this drop-dead hilarious show.
Accolade for A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder include four Tony Awards. One awarded for Best Musical, the others for Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Costume Design of a Musical, all in 2014. It features a book by Robert L. Freedman and music by Steven Lutvak. Lutvak also served as a musical consultant on “Where Elephants Weep”, a cross-cultural collaboration between a Cambodian composer and an American librettist, which premiered at the Chenla Theater in Cambodia in November of 2008. Director Darko Tresnjak has toured across Japan with the U.N.I.M.A. Award-winning Mum Puppettheater. Peggy Hickey's international credits include travel to China to choreograph La Cenerentola and Ballo en Maschara for the Hong Kong Arts Festival; and to Finland for Don Giovanni and Salome for the Savonlinna Opera Festival. The musical is based off a novel by British writer, Roy Horniman.
