North America's largest and most immersive touring Titanic experience sails into Charlotte, North Carolina, for the first time this spring and summer. “Titanic: The Exhibition,” docks at The Park Expo & Conference Center from Friday, May 15, through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

Produced by Imagine and following highly successful stops in Chicago, Dallas and Salt Lake City that welcomed more than 700,000 visitors, the exhibition's arrival in Charlotte continues the public's timeless fascination with the legendary ocean liner.

“Titanic: The Exhibition” is an interactive experience chronicling the amazing story of the design, construction, launch, maiden voyage and tragic ending of the largest and most luxurious ship in the world at that time.

Upon “boarding,” guests receive a boarding card to trace a real passenger's journey. Visitors step into re-created first- and third-class cabins to experience life on board. From there, they proceed through galleries showcasing artifacts from the Titanic and other White Star Line vessels of that period, and discover the ship's resting place 2.5 miles down on the ocean floor.

The journey concludes at a memorial wall, where guests reflect on the 1912 tragedy and learn the fate of their assigned passenger.

The tale of the Titanic has a profound North Carolina connection, as the Cape Hatteras U.S. Weather Bureau Station was the first to receive the ship's initial telegraph distress message that it had struck an iceberg. The message arrived at 11:25 p.m. on April 14, 1912, and was forwarded to counterparts in New York. The ship sank three hours later at 2:20 a.m. on April 15.

This Cape Hatteras link is one of several regional ties featured in a new gallery, “Titanic's Connections to the Carolinas,” created specifically for the Charlotte exhibition.

“Titanic: The Exhibition” holds personal meaning for Imagine President & CEO Tom Zaller. Zaller has visited the wreck site and presented hundreds of exhibitions honoring the ship, her people and their enduring stories.

“We are incredibly proud to bring this experience to Charlotte. The story of the Titanic continues to fascinate people,” Zaller said. “Given North Carolina's unique and direct historical ties to the ship's final hours, our exhibition will immerse visitors in that history of the Titanic in a deeply resonant way, with media experiences and recreated environments that bring the story to life.”

Music from the era plays throughout the exhibit as patrons view exquisitely detailed re-creations of the ship's interiors, including a replica of the ship's famous Grand Staircase, the first-class hallway and millionaires' suite, the third-class hallway and accommodations, the boiler room and the ship's exterior promenade deck complete with a starry night sky.

The Discovery Gallery is dedicated to discovery and research of the Titanic's wreckage site and features a raised glass floor simulating the sea-floor debris field where the ship came to rest. The gallery includes a captivating film that provides an in-depth look at the forensic research related to the collision, break-up and sinking of the Titanic.

A companion VR Experience, available as an optional add-on, allows guests to descend 2.5 miles beneath the Atlantic Ocean's surface to the Titanic's final resting place. Once there, they view firsthand what it's like to explore the ship in its present condition. Guests can also choose to enhance their journey with an optional audio guide, providing a rich narrative with additional in-depth stories.

“ 'Titanic: The Exhibition' connects visitors to the moving human stories of Titanic's passengers and crew,” said Mark Lach, the exhibition's creative producer. “As a member of the last team to dive to the Titanic wreck site to recover artifacts, I saw firsthand the awe-inspiring scale and significance of the ship. Of course, it was exciting, but also very emotional as well.

“Through the passengers' stories, immersive recreations, and authentic artifacts, we've brought that sense of wonder and discovery to our guests, allowing them to step back in time and experience Titanic's legacy like never before.”
