Be Captivated by Culture & Conservation

On our Captivating Kenya journey, beyond meeting Maasai warriors and being awed by the majesty of the country's wildlife, you'll meet someone like Dorothy Sasha Lowuekuduk.  As lead elephant keeper at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, Dorothy filled a role traditionally reserved for men, because the elephants responded to her in a different way.  Now she's not only making a difference in the lives of these orphaned creatures but is a living example of how gender equality in the workplace empowers not just women in her community but in her country and the continent. 

Reteti isn't just an elephant sanctuary that has redefined wildlife management, it's been instrumental in breaking down stereotypes by providing new employment opportunities for women.  The women of the Samburu tribe who are elephant keepers, or caretakers, were not able to attend school, and thought that their only future was as a pastoralist driving livestock. Now they can get a job at Reteti, where their intimate knowledge of nature is an asset.  In turn, a living wage boosts their local economy.  Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Samburu County of northern Kenya home to the first community owned elephant orphanage in Africa.

When our guests visit Reteti, they experience a behind the scenes look at the Sanctuary and get to meet the women who care for these creatures.  Guests can dive deeper into Kenya's culture when they combine it with a ME to WE adventure for an extended opportunity to meet women from the Maasai Mara community and learn how they are exploring opportunities to devote more time to women's education.
