Over the years, African Governments, have made significant commitments towards gender equality. On an African Travel, Inc. journey, you won't only enjoy an unforgettable luxury safari, but we ensure meaningful moments, including meeting strong and inspiring women who are making travel matter in Africa
Below are three trips we're proud of that highlight the power of gender equality:
Be Captivated by Culture & Conservation
On our Captivating Kenya journey, beyond meeting Maasai warriors and being awed by the majesty of the country's wildlife, you'll meet someone like Dorothy Sasha Lowuekuduk. As lead elephant keeper at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, Dorothy filled a role traditionally reserved for men, because the elephants responded to her in a different way. Now she's not only making a difference in the lives of these orphaned creatures but is a living example of how gender equality in the workplace empowers not just women in her community but in her country and the continent.
Reteti isn't just an elephant sanctuary that has redefined wildlife management, it's been instrumental in breaking down stereotypes by providing new employment opportunities for women. The women of the Samburu tribe who are elephant keepers, or caretakers, were not able to attend school, and thought that their only future was as a pastoralist driving livestock. Now they can get a job at Reteti, where their intimate knowledge of nature is an asset. In turn, a living wage boosts their local economy. Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Samburu County of northern Kenya home to the first community owned elephant orphanage in Africa.
When our guests visit Reteti, they experience a behind the scenes look at the Sanctuary and get to meet the women who care for these creatures. Guests can dive deeper into Kenya's culture when they combine it with a ME to WE adventure for an extended opportunity to meet women from the Maasai Mara community and learn how they are exploring opportunities to devote more time to women's education.
Discover What's Possible in Rwanda
The draw for visitors far and wide to Rwanda are the country's endangered mountain gorillas. On our Discover Rwanda adventure, we take you on an adventure in the land of a thousand hills that's as much about the wonderful people, as the diversity of creatures that call this amazing country home. People like Dalida who survived the Rwandan genocide as child and who now lives her dream as a safari driver and guide and who may just change your own outlook on life and gender equality.
Fall for the vibrant and beautiful capital city Kigali and prepare to be awed as much by its pristine streets and community clean ups (which also take place throughout the country), as it's art, music and fashion scene.
In Akagera National Park overlooking scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga, experience sustainable and authentic ecotourism at Magashi Camp. Brimming with wildlife, keep your eyes peeled during guided game drives, walks and boating trips for the Big Five and more!
Don your gaiters and gear and get ready to hike into the mountains of Volcanoes National Park, although you'll ever be prepared for your first sighting of the country's star attraction – the endangered mountain gorilla. Rwanda is home to a variety of chimpanzees, bird species, flora and fauna, all of which add to what makes visiting such a spectacular adventure. As does the luxury accommodations at One&Only lodges where you can rest your weary bones, savoring the experiences of the day.
