This is Incredible, Simply Amazing!!

Perisher

Perisher Blue has been blasted by a full winter storm that has blanketed the resort with close to a metre of snow since Saturday night.

Snow drifts three metres high are everywhere! I had to dig out my snow mobile again this morning, buried overnight for the third time in as many days. All that I could see was the top of the wind screen.

The previous night I asked one of the over-snow machine operators to mow down a huge snow embankment beside our lodge so that I could drive our skidoo out. In the morning the drift was there again bigger than before!

Once I eventually dug my motorised snow sled out, on the way to work, I encountered snow wind waves as tall as the buildings they surrounded. I had to punch through several snow banks covering the road that made me realise how amazing the quality of the snow can be in September.

I could not help but think. This will make the snow depth chart spike again. I also thought: how good is the skiing going to be when the storm breaks!!

I have lived in Perisher Blue for over 10 years and lived in the snow country since 1990 and I have difficulty remembering such a good snow storm in mid September. I would have to go back to 1992 when we got blasted by a huge cold front that produced big snow like this.

I remember skiing powder on the last day of the season in 1994, which was incredible. The way this season is panning out, we could be again.

I also remember excellent September falls in 1996, that kept us going strong right to the last day, but they did not have the same impact as this storm. Long live the snow!! If there are any keen skiers and snowboarders out there reading this, or first timers contemplating a crack at it, Id suggest you get to the snowy mountains as quick as you can, because conditions like this are too good to be true.
