South Georgia Expedition 26 Apr 2005
The Write Stuff

Peregrine Adventures

Journalist and author Chris Haslam is running a series of travel writing workshops during Peregrine Adventures 13-day voyage, aboard the ice-strengthened Akademik Sergey Vavilov, to the South Atlantic wildlife hot-spot of South Georgia, departing Ushuaia 26th November. Travellers will learn about the technical, practical and literary aspects of travel writing, for pleasure and for profit.

The workshops will be based on the LSJ (London School of Journalism) Travel Writing syllabus, and will cover approximately two or three sessions below decks as well as tips in the field and no doubt over dinner.

For those with a genuine interest in wildlife the astonishing richness of South Georgia stands out amongst other superlative natural history highlights experienced on any Polar expedition voyage. To this end Peregrine Adventures has designed an itinerary that focuses solely on South Georgia, allowing much more time to appreciate the islands remarkable natural history.

Travellers board the reassuringly rugged Akademic Sergey Vavilov in Ushuaia, that afternoon charting a course through the Beagle Channel and setting sail across the Antarctic Convergence towards South Georgia. During the initial days at sea, as well as Chris Haslams writing workshops, those on board will have time to attend presentations on conservation and the fascinating history of Antarctic exploration. As the mountains of South Georgia hove in to view, prospective landing sights are chosen depending upon wind direction and ice conditions.

There should be ample opportunity for sitting on beaches surrounded by Sub-Antarctic Fur Seal and their pups, observing penguins and other wildlife, cruising in zodiacs amongst ice-bergs and perhaps hiking up to some of the impressive inland viewpoints.

Highlights include Possession Bay where James Cook landed from the Endeavour in 1775, Salisbury Plain largest of the islands King Penguin rookeries, and Grytviken site of Sir Ernest Shackletons grave and the remains of a rusting whaling station. On the last-night of the return voyage theres a special Captains Supper before an early morning arrival into Tierra del Fuego and Ushuaia.

The voyage costs from 3,170p/p including transfers in Ushuaia, all voyage activities and excursions, travel writing workshops and education programme together with all meals. International flights are not included. Optional guided sea kayaking is available on this voyage from 225p/p drysuits and lifejackets provided.

Chris Haslam is an author and Sunday Times travel writer. He has also written travel pieces for The Guardian and The Mail on Sunday and has contributed to numerous publications in the US, reporting from destinations as diverse as Palestine, Colombia and Rwanda.
