Every year, locals and visitors to Reykjavik wait with baited breath for some of the world's top film directors to descend into town for a 10 day long party with innovative new films and documentaries shown in local, quirky venues for incredible 'experience' viewing. Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina welcomes film buffs from across the world to stay in the heart of the action, even hosting films in the hotel's own Slipp cinema or Slippbíó.
Movie buffs who think they've seen it all will be stunned by the mind-blowing film experiences that RIFF has to offer. There is the annual film shown in a heated swimming pool with 80s classics such as The Neverending Story, film viewings in the living room of an Icelandic director's house or a film shown in the 'Centre of the Earth'; guests are driven by bus to a secret location to watch a film inside a volcanic lava cave.
As well as emphasising young Icelandic talent, some of last year's films included the harrowing American drama Beasts of the Southern Wild, directed by US director Benh Zeitlin, the coming-of-age drama Broken by UK director Rufus Norris and the Swedish film Eat Sleep Die, written and directed by Gabriela Pichler; to name just a few.
RIFF was founded in 2004 by a group of film enthusiasts and professionals to celebrate both local and international film culture. The festival shows a wide range of dramas and non-fiction films from over 40 countries highlighting independent filmmaking from all over the world with an emphasis on new up and coming film-makers.
Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina is centrally located and close to all of the film showings in various venues around the city centre. The hotel has a fresh and funky cosmopolitan city design offering an authentic and relaxed Reykjavik experience and is home to the Slipp Bar (Slippbarinn), Iceland's largest cocktail bar offering a wide variety of hand selected wines and tasty cocktails to kick start an evening of cinematic entertainment or for a relaxing nightcap.
