Northumberland hotel The White Swan in Alnwick, Northumberland has been hailed as one of the best in the North East of England, after being shortlisted down to the final three for the North East Tourism Awards Large Hotel of the Year and taking the bronze title. Shortlisted down from 900 hotels in the region, the awards are widely considered to be the tourism industry's version of the Oscars.
Paul Smith, general manager of The White Swan hotel and youngest manager in niche hotel group Classic Lodges, said "this will raise both the profile and awareness of Alnwick as an outstanding visitor destination. To be shortlisted down from 900 hotels in the region to the final three, alongside hotels such as the Hilton Gateshead who got silver, and Gisborough Hall who got gold in the Tees Valley is an incredible accolade".
Paul Smith continues "To be nationally recognised by such a prestigious award will undoubtedly bring more business into the hotel and the region. We constantly strive to offer the best that the region has to offer, both in terms of value and quality. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my customers, staff and my marketing team for all their hard work and effort this year".
With over 1.3 million spent on the 300 year old coaching inn last year, careful attention was taken not to disturb the hotel's unique history... Former owner of the hotel Mr Algernon Smart, who was a regular passenger on the RMS Olympic, infamous sister ship to the legendary Titanic, purchased much of the contents of the ship at auction when it was decommissioned in the North East in the 1930's. Lovingly restored, the ship's original panelling, lighting, fireplaces, mirrors, staircase and revolving doors were painstakingly fitted into the hotel, offering something distinctly special as well as being a sought after wedding destination by brides from around the world. Today photographs of the hotel feature heavily in books about the Titanic, as there was very little photography around when the Titanic sank. The dramatic staircase also featured in blockbuster film the Titanic made famous by Kate Winslett and Leonardo DiCaprio...
Paul Smith said "as the largest provider of accommodation in the area, we wanted to give our guests all the modern comforts of a top hotel, combined with the opulence and history of one of the greatest tragedies of our time. We have also just taken on a new Head Chef who will be using the best produce the region has to offer. The North East has an abundance of fresh produce, from freshly caught seafood, local game, fruit and vegetables to locally reared meat. We constantly strive to offer value for money, with a range of offers to tempt our customers in every month until the end of the year. Keeping it local is top of our list".
